So I brought the Avant in for service due to a vibration and a whirling noise when driving at 55-80+mph.....sound gets worse and worse and began to start at lower speeds.

    Specs:
    2004 A4 Avant
1.8T STOCK on 18" RS6 no spacers, no staggering.
    43,xxx on the clock

Tech found ripped INNER cv boots & BAD REAR DIFF.

The inner CV boots only move up and down they dont spin...and were checked when I had the trans seals repaired about 3months ago. I drive the car very very easy, I accell smooth to the center lane and sit at 65-75mph, I rarely drive enthusiastically with the "go" pedal since it doesnt really go anywhere in a hurry. WTF could have caused this or do I have bad luck, anyone else have this problem????or have a rear diff replaced....

Thank god its under warranty and I have the S4 to drive in the mean time. I miss my avant already its such a great car to just get in and go....nice and relaxing car to drive.

I have gone to this dealer for the entire life of all my Audis and he is extremely reliable and trustworthy, tech showed me ripped cv boots, there was old grease all over. This is the only tech that works on my car becuase the service manager knows im meticulious and out of my mind when it comes to my cars.

I replaced my inner CV boot on the drivers side when i had about 70k on the clock so i guess they just tend to go out or get ripped up i guess. Atleast its under warranty. lol.

Yeah, I'd say be happy that it's covered and enjoy it more when you get it back!

As far as the CV boots, I've had about half of them replaced (inner & outer) in the last 10K miles. Mine's a 2004.5 with 52,xxx. keep an eye out for grease in the next year and get ready for more CV boot replacements.

The inner CV joints most certainly do rotate. Most of the time the outers rip b/c they are closer the wheel and more susceptable to FOD, but the inners can go as well.

What are the symptoms the bad rear diff? Carrier bearing? That is one very expensive fix, its honestly better to just buy a used diff and swap the whole thing.

You are lucky you are covered by warranty!

You are 100% correct...I dont know why I said that..the whole axle spins..I musta been tired. I think it was 3200 for the replacement and 2700+ for labor.

Symptoms are a whirring noise, it sounded like the front wheel bearing since they tend to go on these cars, but they lifted the car and heard it from the back, drained the diff oil and it had a metallic film to it....prolly woulda lasted a bit longer but if it under warranty....I wanna get it done and over with.

I got a ride in an s5 yesterday...out of this world!!!
