    Re: Do test pipes smell?

Pipe does not smell but the exhaust that comes out through it does. HFC will smell some too.

    Re: Do test pipes smell?

Test pipes smell like the car is running rich and usually have a sulfur smell. The Labree HFC smells like stock. The HFC is the way to go.

If I was to do it again, I'd go with a HFC.

    Re: Do test pipes smell?

There are probably 100 posts on this already but one more couldn't hurt.

I bought my car with a K04 and a hollowed out stock cat. Then replaced that with a Labree test pipe and did a track day. Then half a year later replaced that with a Labree HFC.

    Gutted stock cat:
    smelled funny
    sounded funny
    looked stock

    Labree test pipe:
    pain to install
    better spool
    felt like more power
    droned badly
    obnoxious sound in quiet neighborhoods
great sound for the track or when starting on cold days
    stinky
people have walked up and said "that has a test pipe doesn't it"
    environmentally friendly? not even remotely.

    Labree HFC:
    installs much easier
driving feel is the same as the test pipe
    sound is more refined
    drone is gone
    no more stinky
    environmentally friendly
    best of all worlds

Do you think a HFC will affect a BT setup for sound? I want mine to be a tad quieter while still having the same power.

I love the smell, it reminds me of a motorcycle. Not like sulphur as some people would have you believe.

Going from the test pipe to the HFC the sound became a little more mellow, less raspy, less throaty, and in general had a more mature refined Euro sound. I run a K04, Labree HFC, Neuspeed downpipe, and Neuspeed exhaust.

    Re: Do test pipes smell?

I just picked up another car finally, hasn't been even a week and it already has a 3" custom test pipe in there along with custom software. Makes world difference, even over a high flow cat which is what the car had before.

Smells a little, but Id def recommend it to anyone trying to get real gains out of the stock turbo.

Exhaust with a test pipe smells like rotten eggs.

I am selling my LaBree shortly since I am moving away from the k04. If you are interested let me know. I am pulling it end of this month or very early Sept.

    Re: Do test pipes smell?

Mine doesn't smell like that either.

Although occasionally i'll stop at a red light and get a whiff of it, and it'll make me hungry because i think of a hot propane grill cooking steaks.

    Re: Do test pipes smell?

The sulfur/rotten eggs smell is definitely NOT from a testpipe - that's what you get when you have a catalytic converter:

When high sulfur fuel is burned, there is a chemical reaction in the catalytic converter causing the sulfur to oxidize.
As the vehicle is driven, the oxidizing reaction odor in the converter will decrease with mileage and age.

Replacing the catalytic converter will not eliminate sulfur smell and replacement will just extend the
period of time needed for the converter to 'age' allowing it to reduce sulfur smell to an acceptable
    level.

    Re: Do test pipes smell?

I've been running a test pipe for about 2 years now. The "smell" isn't as bad as some make it out to be. The only time where I really notice it is if the car has been idling in front of an open garage for a few minutes.

As far as the smell that *is* there...I've found a simple solution...just buy race gas...

    Re: Do test pipes smell?

It doesn't smell like rotten eggs, it smells like a gasoline powered engine like on a lawn mower.

It only stinks IMO when the car isn't fully warmed up, when the ECU is still enriching the mixture to lessen the warm-up time, otherwise it's fine. I like the sound of it though.
