    My exhaust dump (2.0T)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
There is currently another thread, but I feel the title/subject is making it lack views. This will be an overview of my install, impressions, and a free for all for any questions of people interested. Video posted in post #22!

For my attention getter, I give you my install completed as of today.

Blurry, but this is how far it hangs down. Barely at all, so notice there is plenty of room to run a cut-out.

Position. I wanted to mount it further up and only on the downpipe, but the center differential was there and I didn't feel like welding it in there. It replaced the exhaust sleeve, so my exhaust system is one solid piece right now

This picture shows how it sits right after the differential, but over an inch away from the driveshaft for plenty of clearance.

Mounting the switch. I was going to put it in the glove box for a clean install, but didn't feel like opening it and reaching in there all the time (since I like to play with it ). Instead, I put it in the cubby hole under the steering wheel. Hole is drilled next to where the switch is laying:

Toggle switch is easily reached, even with the manual in there. Out of sight, and in hand in under two seconds

    Re: My exhaust dump (2.0T)

Information about exhaust cutouts, or exhaust dumps.

When I got my first 1.8 turbo, right away I started looking for exhaust solutions. I looked at tons of $800+ cat-back systems, then I came across some suggestions to buy a dump tube. I figured a dump tube would free up my exhaust and give me the least amount of back pressure possible, so I would get the best results from it.

I then learned there are two types of dump tubes: pneumatic and electronic. Pneumatic dump tubes are activated by a vacuum line, and the butterfly valve opens whenever you get into higher boost. Electronic dump tubes have a physical switch, so you can have the dump open/closed or any position in between.

I figured the obvious solution would be the electronic dump, but it had a higher potential to break. Since it uses an electronic motor, you can put stress on it by trying to open or close it further than it can go. I went ahead and bout the 2.5" electronic dump from Quick Time Performance for a cheap $205 plus shipping. I only had to pay maybe $35 to get the y-pipe welded in, so this setup is less than half the cost of any respectable cat-back system.

    Re: My exhaust dump (2.0T)

What you need to know if you purchase an exhaust cutout.

No matter which type or brand you choose, I think all of them are supposed to be "maintenance free". But this is BS. They are not lubricated or sealed very well, so before you install yours you need to saturate the shit out of it with antiseize or some similar compound. My first one completely seized after one winter in Wisconsin (daily driver) so I had to purchase another one.

So when you get yours, the first step is to lubricate all of the moving parts. I chose to use antiseize (found at any parts store), which I think is the best way to go. Here is what mine looked like after I worked the paste into/around where the shaft twists around:

It is important to lube it right away, and probably clean the housing every once in a while. I didn't touch my first one ever, and this is what it looked like after almost one year...

Tons of carbon deposits, and completely seized up and not moving. So don't be like me and have to waste $110 on another cutout body!

Nice. Im getting mine done Friday along with installing my downpipe. I will do three dyno runs.

    1) Pump Gas with Full Exhaust
    2) Pump Gas with Dump valve open
    3) Repeat 1st

    Re: My exhaust dump (2.0T)

Awesome , that will be wonderful to have those numbers.

Upon opening mine, I notice much better throttle response, and turbo lag in higher gears seems to be better. I have no numbers to prove anything, but those are my impressions.

Also, holy shit is this loud when paired with a test pipe! It is MUCH louder than when I had it on my 1.8T with oem cats. and instead of "farting" when you let off the gas (as you test pipe people all know), it goes "AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!"

When I had it on my 1.8T (stock exhaust) it would backfire in 1st/2nd gear if I revved it past 6,000rpm.

I drove around with it open for an hour tonight, and did not get a backfire. It is fucking loud, it is really gurgly and makes lots of little popping noises, and when I let off the throttle (with a test pipe) it makes a big POOP noise instead of the old fart sound.

I can do a cell phone vid, but I have an old camcorder that works better... but that's really hard to edit and get online. Tomorrow after work I can get something up, and hopefully it isn't too shitty.

I was just thinking that my Digital Rebel can not take video, but my girlfriend has a Canon Powershot that takes decent video... I will use that tomorrow and get something cool for you guys

    Story time:

I was driving down our Main Street with my exhaust at like 150dB, and watching for cops all paranoid while I was having my fun. I car familiar headlights, but it was unmarked and had a normal plate and didn't look like a cop. I said whatever and kept going, then it turned it's lights on and pulled over some old Bronco in the next lane and two cars behind me suckaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, nobody suspects the Audi

    Re: My exhaust dump (2.0T)

Our exhaust where I mounted mine (the downpipe) is 2.25". Actually... My y-pipe is 2.5" since my TT exhaust was 2.5", but the shop said it would fit right over the 2 1/4" stock piping like a sleeve (which it did) so that is why it looks a tad bigger.

Hell, I already had it and wanted a free dump

I took some quick vids, I'll try to get them up right now.

    Re: My exhaust dump (2.0T)

Phrost I went to my local muffler shop and got the Y-pipe installed. I haven't ordered the exhaust dump yet, but is sounds so SICK!...imo.

I currently have a custom magnaflow exhaust setup and the exhaust note disappears after 4k rpm's. After installing the Y-pipe, it growls and low rpm's and screams through out the rest of the power band.

One question though, is it ok for it to always be open?

    Here is a quick video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hb480ep3SxE Note: right under the video, you can choose to "watch video in high quality"

Sorry it is kind of crappy... My gf's Powershot has a shitty microphone, I had to hold it so the microphone would be be covered up, and I wasn't used to a piece of shit girly little wrist strap fluttering around so that is a little annoying. It'll do for now though

    Re: My exhaust dump (2.0T)

My video makes it sound quieter than it really is. It doesn't capture anything but WOT really, so take this as a sample of what it is kind of like

At 1:01, I actually got a very loud backfire (which is why I jerked the camera because I was scurrrred) but the camera barely even captured it. Only backfire I got so far, but it is really poppy/gurgly when you let off the throttle.

korbis doesn't seem to really get on it or drive at WOT in any of his vids. Honestly. with my 1.8T (and no test pipe) it was just loud... but with my 2.0T (and ECode test pipe) it is muthafuckin loud! Very very holy shit. I'll try to find someone with a good camera in the near future to capture the true sound of what you get.

Yes, but I don't want curious people to watch the videos and think it's not that loud. It fucking hurts my ears if I drive past cars/walls (or through that tunnel ) so it is serious business.

Idle is actually very quiet, driving normally pretty much sounds like your exhaust fell off, but getting on it sounds like a V8 with straight pipes. Not for the faint of heart

I understand that its loud, but is it honestly TOO loud? I'm 17 years old and I like loud exhausts, but I don't like it when it's super annoying and drones and hurts my ears. Is it a nice sound??? Also how well does the valve open and close? Can i close and open it as much as i want? Does it open half way to get half the sound, or is it all or nothing?
P.S. I have eurocode testpipe also
