    1.8T TIP Weirdness?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Since I've started using my Tiptronic more often, I've noticed that when I shift into 2nd, it's almost like there's a 1.5th gear.

    1st - rev up to ~4000, shift
feel the kick, revs drop to ~3000 then go up to ~3500
kicks again (without me shifting), and revs drop to ~3000 again

Is this normal? It's definitely not, based on my limited knowledge of manu-matics, but I'm thinking it has to do with rev-matching so as not to kill the clutch.

Any thoughts or advice is appreciated.

no no happens to me too.. as a fellow tipster.. i can tell you this.. its ur transmission module (ECU for ur trans) senses that ur RPM/engine speed is too low for 2nd grear so it completes 1st gear for u really quick then into second.. nothing to be worried about.. i know EXACTLY what u talking bout.. kinda pisses me off 2. =)

When you guys go BT, you'll appreciate the fact that the tranny does that.

    Re: 1.8T TIP Weirdness?

i experience something similar after shifting into 2nd. i usually shift before 3000 though, so i shift into second, in second the revs go up to ~2500-2600, then drop down to ~2100-2200 then proceed to go back up. as far as i can tell, its the only gear that happens in.

Garbage transmission? If that is your opinion of the ZF trans in your Audi, you really are clueless here.

That extra bump after the trans shifts to 2nd, is the torque converter clutch locking up. When in tip mode, the TC clutch is locked up as much as possible so 2nd > 5th >1st is without TC slip in Tip mode.

no no lol, they are not garbage, ZF makes some of the best trannies in the world, but by garbage i meant complicated and difficult to deal with when modifying.

    Re: 1.8T TIP Weirdness?

So I just bought an 04 Ultrasport and I'm also noticing this odd behavior in mid 2nd gear. However..I swear it also does this in fully-auto mode. Can someone verify?

    Re: 1.8T TIP Weirdness?

I thought I explained this already here, but maybe not.

The "shift like" bump felt in second gear, is the torque converter clutch locking up after the 1>2 gear up shift. With the TCC locked, aka, "closed", the power flow is direct drive without any hydrodynamic slipping or other losses.

    Re: 1.8T TIP Weirdness?

diagnosticator, I really appreciate the quality control. Yeah my ZF does the same thing and I have a modified trans and TC. That is just what it does.
