Switching to an S4 Rear, have a few questions about exhaust cut-outs.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have had my car looked at by the body shop and they said they can order me an S4 rear and are confident that they can install it without issues but there was one concern they did have and it was regarding the exhaust cutouts.
Will my exhaust need to be re-hung at all? Or are the cut-outs from a stock A4 bumper and S4 bumper in the same exact places? I am pretty sure that the cut-outs are placed in the same spots and the same distance from each other on both bumpers but I am not 100% sure. And if anything it looks like the cut-outs on the S4 rear may be placed a little lower down, which would mean my exhaust would have to be hung lower.
Also a point where I am concerned is that the chrome strip which runs along the top of the bumper is different on the S4, so they said they need to order that part as well and it costs quite a bit $180 if I remember correctly. Is there any way to make the stock A4 part work? Or a cheaper aftermarket strip that I could purchase?

Other than that as long as my exhaust will not have to be re-worked in order to clear the bumper then I am going to go ahead and have them order it.

Not too sure about the chrome strip, but the bumper will bolt right on!

Chrome strip is exactly the same and so are the exhaust cut outs. What they may have to do is adjust the rebar to make it shorter. I'll find the thread for you that has the instructions

EDIT: Check the bootom of Page two for any rebar info you may need.

Re: Switching to an S4 Rear, have a few questions about exhaust cut-outs.

The rebar WILL work with your car, if worst comes to worst they will just need to turn the shocks in to shorten them my shop did not have to. Should bolt up just fine, your exhaust if it fits on the a4 should fit on the s4 bumper fine as well.

As far as the chrome strip goes, it IS diffrent and the a4 apparently is a little bit larger and hangs off the edge. Some have been able to modify the a4 one which requires cutting off tabs along the bottom of the a4 strip and taping it on the s4 bumper but apparently it hangs over the side a bit not a perfect fit. I tried ordered the black strip which is only 65 but turns out is for avant only and I have to return it.

I have yet to order that strip the cheapest i found was 120 Genuineaudiparts.com and i guess i might have to bite the bullit, and jsut paint it black to match the bottom of the bumper. the bottom was painted flat black. Excuse the dirty car i washed it yesterday, and the people who washed the car at the shop did a crappy job waxing it and theres wax on the wing and near the bottom.

Yes I did, I spoke with Rick, who spoke to Billy and the exhaust not lining up in the bumpers cutouts was their only concern, as well as the extra cost of that damn chrome strip. But since I know the exhaust will line up fine then I am going to give them a call and tell them to go ahead and order the S4 Rear.

It took some tweaking of my magnaflows for them to be centered (and they weren't hit).

Re: Switching to an S4 Rear, have a few questions about exhaust cut-outs.

The only real issue is that the standard A4 bumper sits about 1/2 inch lower than the S4 bumper, so, basically your exhaust will look like it is hanging a tad bit low at first.

All you have to do it adjust the exhaust and alles guten.

Ok this is fine then, as long as the tips are not hitting the cutouts and melting the bumper, I would rather have it this way. So I will get the bumper put in first, then when I go to get my exhaust fixed I will just have them shorten the hangers a bit to pull the tips up within the cutouts so everything looks right.

Thanks for the the help on this guys!

Re: Switching to an S4 Rear, have a few questions about exhaust cut-outs.

Jordan took some very thick zip ties and put them on the OEM rubber clamps (not hanging the exhaust with the zip ties) and it brought the exhaust back up to within 1/4 inch.

This is what mine looked like before I adjusted them, I had to bring the left side in slightly by loosening the centering bar and adjusting it. I did not take a picture of the final adjustment.

To be honest I'm not sure which part number I ordered. However, the Audi rep working in the parts department said something about an avant when I picked it up. I might be taking my bumper off this weekend, if so I'll check out the number.

This looks fine by me, the mufflers do sit a little low under the cutouts, but it does not look bad by any means. Again I plan to get the bumper on and then have the exhaust repaired after so that way they can adjust the hangers and get them lined up nice in the cutouts at the same time.
