Timing Belt Change - Now Econ Light Stuck On

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I changed my timing belt over the past couple of days and last night was the test drive after it was all done. Everything seemed to be fine but when I turned on the AC the econ light stayed on. I pressed the button, and it went off as the button was depressed, but came back on when I let go off the button.

The only thing out of the ordinary I did during the tbelt change was when I swung the AC radiator down out of the way. Before I realized I could just swing it down I had started to unscrew the refrigerent line that goes into it (I did not realize that it was the AC line). When I saw the refrigerent start to leak, I immediately tigtened it back up so I dont thing I lost too much.

Also prior to changing my timing belt the water pump impeller was just spinning on the shaft so the car was overheating. I did not drive it long at all before I shut it down, but it did run pretty close to H on the temp gauge and the coolant low indicator came on. Not sure if this threw the car in some sort of limp mode with the AC.

I checked over all the connections last night but I was tired, maybe I missed a connection that isnt turning on the compressor, would this cause the ECON light to stay on. Either way I will run a VAG Diag when I get home.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

we just had to redo one that another shop had pinched the wires when they put the radiator support back on. I'd look at all the wires in that area first.

That or your diminimus, I love that word, loss of refrigerant was too much and you need to charge the system.

If that isn't the case either I had the Climate control unit fail which left the econ mode stuck on, had the unit changed out at the stealership. Good luck.

pondside, would vag pick up insufficient refrigerent? I doubt the Climate control unit failed as it was working fine prior to the tbelt change...

Re: Timing Belt Change - Now Econ Light Stuck On

From your description I'd say you let out too much refridgerent and need a recharge. If you are going to do a recharge I recommend replacing the dryer unit and cleaning or replacing the expansion valve. cheaper to buy them at discountacparts.com over the stealership. The reason I say to replace the dryer unit is that you let ambient air into the system which could potentially saturate the dryer rendering it useless. This can in turn cause your ac compressor to fail. Doesn't sound like you let the thing leak for any length of time though so you are prolly good with your current ac dryer. I would still clean the expansion valve if you get a recharge though.

What CO Avant is very true also.. refrigerant absorbs moisture which in turn is not compressable.. hence the new dryer and expansion valve.. I'm not sure if VAG can pick up a low reefer charge. You can always get a bottle at autozone and charge it up or have a shop check to see how much you have left in the system.

Re: Timing Belt Change - Now Econ Light Stuck On

went to the shop and they said the amount of refrigerent that I let out was so little that, it would should not cause the problem. So they want me to spend $98/hr to figure out what went wrong. this sucks, that I did my tbelt change scotch free. anyone have any ideas. They said that the high side shows static pressure, its not that anything is blocked, just no pressure being pumped from compressor, he said it may be the compressor but i doubt that. It was fine before i changed the tbelt???

Your ac compressor is prolly okay still just needs an evacuation, recharge of ac, and oil topped up on the compressor. $100 for recharge is fairly standard. When you do installs yourself and are learning the process to do so you will run into things like these. Don't kick yourself over it, cause that's how you learn. All of us who do all our own installs have fucked something else up at one time or another.

Re: Timing Belt Change - Now Econ Light Stuck On

I picked the car up from the indie shop and this is what they told me. When I brought it there during my lunch break I just wanted them to evacuate the system and recharge it, which is what they did, but this did not solve the problem.

    This is what they did,
    1) Evacuate and recharge ac system with dye trace
    2) They removed 1.05lbs of r134a and put back 1.1lbs, which means I only lost 0.5lbs of freon, so he did not think this is what was causing the ECON mode.
    3) He said the compressor turned on and showed 110 psi/not cold on the high side. They suspect compressor failure, but they will need to spend another hour or so to actually diagnose it.

I had to leave so I picked the car up this evening and this is where I am now. Any more ideas, I will probably just pay to have them diagnose it, but if anyone has any ideas, i'm all ears.

Also CO Avant, thanks for the encouraging words :)

Re: Timing Belt Change - Now Econ Light Stuck On

I just finished running the VAG:

In the Auto HVAC Module this is the error shown:
    00819 - High Pressure Sensor (G65)
    30-00 - Open or Short to B+

Any ideas? Could this be the problem?

Check wiring to the sensor and/or replace your high pressure sensor G65.

where exactly is the sensor/plug located in the engine bay?

It was up front on the drivers side of the radiator, HTH.
