Has anyone attempted to degrease/clean their engine bay? Is it even safe? And how did you if you did?

    Re: Cleaning the engine bay

I haven't done it on this car, but yes, it can be done on any car. I ALWAYS cover ALL of my exposed wires before doing so. Don't use a high pressure stream for it (such as that at a car wash), just soak it and use elbow grease. Simple Green is a good solution for de-greasing. To be honest, professional steam clean is the best way.

    Re: Cleaning the engine bay

I would second the part about not using a high pressure stream. I'm not 100% sure but my car started misfiring after I washed it and they had to replace the coil pack when I took into the dealership.

Damn it, that's what I get I listen to my other friends saying oh no problem, I just pressure stream my trucks engine no problem..duh.

    Re: Cleaning the engine bay

keep in mind steam contains small particles and they can get into some engine parts. I would post this in the detailing forum and let these guys answer it.

I just called the stealer and they suggested steam over high pressure.

if the truck was a diesel... there should be no problem... or to the least very little problems to deal with.

some cars seal the ignition system better than ours hence the coilpack failures (with or without washing them)

    Re: Cleaning the engine bay

I grab plastic bags and cover electrical parts. (Alternator, throttle body, etc.)
Even though the plastic where the ECU sits is water proof I find it easier to clean with a humid towel. (instead of spraying water directly.) Same goes with battery and plastics around it.

I spray degreaser in the heavily grease/oil/dirt areas. Instead of using high water pressure I use the regular water hose's basic pressure. The difference in my method is I buy at either Home Depot/Walmart/Target those toilet scrub brushes which in some places go for less than a dollar and many of them can be turned or flexed into those hard to reach places. By using these brushes you don't have to spray your engine bay with high water pressure. These brushes are cheap so you can either clean reuse or throw it away.

Hope that helps next time I do this I will post pics. Where I work looks like a rally track. (Car is clean only the weekend so under the hood gets pretty nasty)

That picture gives you guys an idea of what I have to drive on. (My bro once hydrolocked his SLK)
This was before they installed some basic sewers. Now instead of flooding half way up the car it floods half way up the door.

Sorry for the long write up.

Simple Green and a couple of rags. I use the same hose I use yo wash my car in some areas. Your bay shouldn;t be that dirty if you clean it regularly and don't go offroading.
