Re: Southbend 20lb Flwwheel. Anyone using it?

I ran Spec's 240mm light-weight billet steel flywheel. It weighed in at 16 pounds....

I had a couple issues related to the lighter flywheel. A nasty vibration which would make the gearbox sound like it was rattling apart, and I couldnt shift from 1st-2nd under hard excelleration. Plus my clutch pedal was all the way to the floor.... I removed the 240mm setup and installed SouthBends OFE HD. At the time, SouthBend did not have their flywheel available yet....

From what I've read, the SouthBend flywheel weighs in at 20 pounds. The Spec LWFW I had weighed in at 16 pounds. I've been contemplating gettin the SBLWFY, but dont really want to find it brings back the same issues I had with the Spec's LWFW. The 4 additional pounds may reduce the vibrations, may not.

My 2004 A4 1.8T Quattro has the 6-speed gearbox. The problems I had may not happen on 5-speed gearbox's...

Yes. The 9, 11 and 12 lbs flywheels are billet aluminum. The 15, 16 and 20 lbs are billet steel. Andy at SB told me he did the 20 lbs flywheel so that it would keep more momentum for people that like to drag race.

Re: Southbend 20lb Flwwheel. Anyone using it?

im running the 12lb FW and the only time it chatters is under 2200rpm on stock mode. and about 1900rpm when i have it on stage one. when the car has boost it doesnt make a noise really. i hear light noise with the a/c on at a dead stop but its only heard if the window is down or your outside the car then it sounds like a tdi. i like my lwfw but next time i'd probally go for a 16lb. it doesnt seem to have the momentum that the stock fw had. its quicker right away but in the long run i'd rather have the momentum its pretty hilly terrain around me.

I have the 20lb SB LWFW on my car right now, no noticeable chatter. Car is also revving a lot faster.

Re: Southbend 20lb Flwwheel. Anyone using it?

Hey guys in case you missed a post of mine on another clutch thread.

After talking to andy/john at Southbend last week , they told me they are now going to offer a 17 lbs billet steel flywheel and also dropping the retail price of the A4 steel flywheels down to $399. That now brings them down to right around the same price as the Spec 15-16 lbs flywheel.

Re: Southbend 20lb Flwwheel. Anyone using it?

I was thinking last night about my 1/4 trip 2 weeks ago. I can't get my car to launch with the 7200 file and I think I figured out why. I'm running a 11lb. alum. FW, lightweight knife edged crank and alum frt. pulley. I've plobably shed about 25-30lbs off my rotating assem. and all the inertia that comes with it. I'm shipping my ECU back to Revo in the morning for the 8500 file.
