FEELER: Oil Cooler Kit for the B5 S4

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
This would be a full oil cooler kit for the B5 S4. What do you think? We don't have any price information yet, just gauging interest.

    Thanks

I say go for it. I've seen oil temps on my car reach 265 in spirited street driving on K03's. So I definitely plan on getting an oil cooler when I go stage 3.

As long as it's sub $500 I'd say go for it. Like others have said you can DIY it fairly cheap.

Would be highly interested if it is sub-$500 and if possible, to be installed at the OEM RS4 oil cooler location.

Could be interesting, but we already have oil cooler on our s4 which is water cooled. Are you gona make an oil to air, or oil to water cooler?

i think if you can use a generic core like B&M, perma-cool, etc and put together a hose kit and instructions, for a decent price, it wouldn't be a bad idea.

you can pretty much use any oil cooler off any car and put a hose setup together.. easy..

Really? I've seen 270 plus after hard driving especially at high altitude, but normal everyday spirited driving usually puts it at just over 250, granted i have K04's. It would be nice to not idle the car for 10 minutes everytime i feel like romping a little.

Does 20-30 deg. really have that much of a negative impact on the engine as long as you cool it down?

doubt you're going to break down synthetic oil in anything under 300 degrees

usually, one of the main points of an oil cooler is that you have another quart of capacity, which always helps

Nice.. $355. Anyone have any experience with this kit? I did a 3-hr short road trip last wkend and ran a few ~85-90mph short interval spurts.. every time I did that, my oil temps ran a to ~230* vs. my standard 225* cruising temp. Normal?

that kit is essentially a mocal thermo plate (which we all use eitherway) basic lines and fittings, and mocal heat exchanger. all of which are great products so i would think the kit works fantastic.

earls oil cooler. 6an inlet and outlet. 75.99

fittings and hose shouldnt cost anywhere close to as much as the cooler itself

you can make your own for under 200

What you all fail to realize is the mounting of the core is as important as anything. This is not something that just hangs itself with zip-ties, and unless you want some rattling and clunking from the front of the car, you need to make sure it is secured. Not to mention possible blockage of the flow to the radiator. Building your own is definitely not as easy as it sounds. Just FYI.

actually it is as easy as it sounds.

its not hard .. at all..

no matter where you put it its always going to block the radiator.. and it doesnt change in size.. so its always going to block the same surface area...

dont make it sound soo complicated.. its not even close to blocking as much as a FMIC does.. and there are no issues with those.

not justifyable for 500 dollars.. not even close that is just outrageous..

the damn cooler itself costs less than 100 bucks.. youre telling me.. the metal stock and hose holders used to mount it + hoses are $300+ the sandwich plate cant be that much either.

    dont think so

not knocking vast.. they are an awesome company.. but cmon guys.. the parts used to moutn it are like a lenght of round bar.. and some threaded rod. you can get these at any home depot for way under 10 bucks..

that leaves like 400 dollars for hoses + a sandwhich plate with thermostat

dont complicate things more than they need to be.. this is why parts for these cars are so god damn expensive..

Your obviously delusional or just inexperienced...

VAST is not offering some Kragen/Auto Zone DIY OCK that sells for $69.99? If you part the kit your self, this is what retail costs are:

Earls Wide Temp-A-Cure 13 Row Oil Cooler: $200
Earls Lines -10 at $12-$15/Foot with 6 feet needed: $90
    Earls Anodized Fittings -10 $35 each x 4: $140
    Billet Sandwich adapter: $50 -$90
Anodized Mounting Brackets: ?? R&D time plus MFG Time &Cost?

Total: $480 not counting the bracket and profit and R&D

Re: FEELER: Oil Cooler Kit for the B5 S4

Prices from summit temp a cure

    earls 5x13x2 16 row cooler.. 125.95

    comes with 10an male fittings

    10an elbows are like 15-20 a piece. y ou need 4.

we will overestimate and say 100 bucks for fittings.(that will include the male ones tthat could go in the sandwhich adaptor)

    were at 225.95

    hose is cheap

i haevnt looked aroudn for the adaptor but we will even over estimate that

    100 bucks for the adaptor.

    ok 325.00

and even if it was another overestimate at 100 dollars for hose

    425.00

    thats a huge over estimate..

what R+D is needed? its an oil cooler... were not developing manifolds here. or a fueling tune..

the mounting hardware.... <10 bucks at home depot

Vast and Avalon are providing a service for people that are either not capable or don't want to put together their own kit. The price they charge isn't unreasonable when you put a price on their time. If you factor parts alone and don't mind mounting it yourself, you can save money by not paying someone elses labor. You can pick up an Earls 13 row core for $111 from JC whitney. You can also pick up a Setrab for around that same price too if you shop around. You can pick up a thermostat controlled sandwich plate for under $100. You don't have to mount the cooler with anodized mounting plates if you don't care about bling. You can safely mount it without using these methods, but it will not look as good. You won't really see any difference between Earls AN fittings and any other quality fitting that cost less. I use the exact AN fittings that you would need on aircraft for less than the Earls fittings you quoted. And they are aircraft quality. In the end you have to weigh whether or not you want to pay for what these kits offer. The kits are all good setups, and are good quality.

Oh and you are also paying for the convenience of not having to do all this work to put it together. I don't mind the work because it isn't hard for me. Some people just shouldn't be modifying their oil supply system.

thats good and all.. but even so.. these are awesome products you can still build a cooler kit for way less than even what i posted by just goin with a name a little less known than earls..

earls uses another company's cores anyways and just mark them up because they put their name on it.

im just trying to show people that with a little extra work (not much)

they can save a lot of money
