She then stated that the 17yr old female was entering her senior year and was "good" in geometry. Most students in today's Bay Area society either take geometry in 8th grade as a "honors" class or take it as a required class in 9th grade (freshmen year). In order to be considered educationally smart as a senior in high school in our corrupted educantional system of today, you'd need to be smart in Calculus. I just graduated from high school, and I am very well aware of our failing educational system. Balboa High School Class of 2008. Just my $.02 on the verbal irony brought up by the news reporter. :]

I feel sorry for the families but, the recklessness and disregard for their own lives as well as others just upsets me. Parents are at fault, they should never just A: hand out something; because you don't respect what is just handed to you B: Give them something way out of their skill limit. It's like giving a baby a metal fork, you just don't do it. Hah, 10ded, you couldn't be more right - I'm Redwood Class of '03, and I couldn't believe some of the cars in the lot. Where you live btw?

While it may be insensitive, I am also in agreement with the people who say this isn't exactly tragic with respect to the Corvette driver or his family. It is inaccurate to call him a child; he was 18 and had graduated high school. He should have long gained the responsibility to know better than to go 100 mph on a frontage road. If you ask me, the GUY got what was coming to him, and the true tragedy is the fact another, innocent life had to be taken with his.

I do not feel for the family, as they are just as much to blame for giving their son such an overpowered car. There just isn't any reason for it; not only is it too much car, he never would've known the pleasure that comes from upgrading the beater-car parents SHOULD get for their kids to their own, new car. Neither will any of those Redwood kids you speak of, 10ded.

I'm 23, a recent college grad, and I can't tell you how happy and excited I was the day I drove off the Sonnen San Rafael Audi dealer lot with MY OWN 2006 A4; no parents co-signing, no nothing, its MINE from my own hard work of finding and maintaining a career-job. Kids who are this "priviledged" will never know that satisfaction.

Another example of this is a friend of mine from Redwood, whose parents bought him a brand new RSX Type S in high school, and upon graduation they upgraded him to a 335i coupe. Talk about a kid who will never know the feeling I just spoke of.....

as for your reaction, that sounds pretty discompassionate to me. as stupid as their parents were noone deserves such things. putting a 17 yo kid in a vette is like putting a blind lesbian in a fish shop. they are going to lose their minds.

it's a moments bad decision making that ruins several lives. it's really really sad. unfortunately for the parents they will have the rest of their lives to think about the irresponsibility of giving a kid a car like that. things happen a whole lot less fast in a mini or an a4 then they do in a vette.

Call me discompassionate if you will, but more and more nowadays kids are becoming less and less responsible, which is a direct reflection of the parents' involvement (or lack thereof) in their kids' lives. Judging by the choice of car for their son, the parents probably fall on the lack thereof side of this spectrum. I never said I wished anything upon them, I merely said I don't really feel sorry for 'em. While it is a truly sad thing to have to bury your own child, and I sympathize with that, I do agree with the person who said it should be considered neglegence on the parents' part.

Also, I live in San Rafael in the Gerstle Park area on Bayview St. in a rather large-scale apartment complex tucked back off the street. Your word " 'hood " is pretty fitting; not to get racist or anything, but my complex is over-run by rude, inconsiderate Mexicans who park all over the no-parking zones and fire lanes, let their kids run around screaming at all hours of the night, and in particular the family above me is unbearable in their noise levels. I can hear every careless footstep stomp and cabinet slam, not to mention it sounds like they have wrestling matches every other night in their living room. And don't worry, I'm no spoiled Marin kid, I lived my last two years of college in a frat house, so I know noise; I could expect and tolerate it there, but can't in my apartment. I'm counting the days 'till I move, as my lease is up in October!
