After The Timing Belt Was Done

i just got my timing belt done for my 1.8t tip like a week ago and i have noticed the feel of the car is different. it feels the belts are really tight and the engine has hard time turning it, due to that it uses more gas to power the engine so the gas milage is is lower then normal. i normally get around 420-440 full tank i get maybe 350-370 full tank...did this happen to everyone who has changed the timing belt on their 1.8t, help please!!!

Re: After The Timing Belt Was Done

Did you do the TB yourself or have a shop do it?

My car and all the other cars I've done a TB on have been perfectly fine afterwards.

a friend of mine did it at his shop, i mean it runs fine but it just feel like it takes more for the engine to turn after the change...

Re: After The Timing Belt Was Done

Pull the spark plugs and put a 19mm 12pt socket on the crank pulley. Turn the engine over by hand. You should feel typical resistance for the piston rings and such. Nothing more. If it feels very tight then there is a problem. If tight, start by removing the serpentine belt and turn the engine over by hand. If its not tight anymore the problem lies with your serpentine belt pulleys. If still tight, the problem lies with your timing belt.

I had a wheel bearing go right after my TB was done which made me think something was wrong with the TB installation. I talked to another Audi owner who said he also had a bearing go bad after a new TB was installed. Coincidence?

    No.

I've done two timing belts on my personal car and my wheel bearings are fine. 129,000miles and counting.

Sounds like it's a tooth off. Is it low (more then normal) on power also?

Haha...it makes me sad that you had to say this, but so true (relating to low power)

So I had to research the word now............

It seems people contradict themselves with that term all the time. I always took the definition as "just a coincidence". Meaning, yeah, it happened at the same time, but for no real reason, it was just fate. The same as people mean "Just a coincidence? I think not!". That, no, it wasn't a coincidence, there was totally a reason for that happening. But the textbook definition is "the occurrence of events that happen at the same time by accident but seem to have some connection"

So technically you were right to say no. But I was right to say yes based on the polar definition the word has taken on in normal speech. And people wonder why it's so hard to learn engrish................

your wheel bearings has nothing at all to do with your timing belt.

Re: After The Timing Belt Was Done

^ yeah, they are like very far away from each other, and should not have been touched when changing the belt. I'm sure some mathematician/physics genius will find the correlation. But I would bet that they are totally separate issues.

Just like when you bring a car into the shop that was seemingly working just fine, get it out of the shop and a whole slew of crap starts going bad. Provided the shop is reputable, things just happen: "Sh!t happens..."
