I think it would be harder to find a B5 S4. Higher miles, older car... it would be fun to play with but I wouldn't want it as my daily driver.
For the B6 S4, I don't trust those two little turbos at all if you chip it. I'd only go big turbo, but then you're going really aftermarket and its a lot of money to get everything running correctly. Nice cars though, but I've heard horror stories about the oem turbos.
B6 A4 1.8T. Many of them have sludge problems. I guess it's from original owners having no idea how to drive turbo cars, I really don't know. I had one friend buy this car from a dealership, and the thing damn near seized up a month later due to sludge and we didn't even see it coming. Good car if you're positive it has been taken care of, but it's damn slow stock and you're going to have to upgrade the turbo to make it quick... IMO I wouldn't buy one.
B7 A4 2.0T. Fresh new look, best options. Engine is great and very quick with just a chip, and still with good gas mileage. Older ones can be found easily in the low $20,000s. Most expensive choice though, but most reliable and not slow at all.
