    Telling a 2000 1.8t motor apart from 2001 visually

I'm looking at a car that had its motor replaced (2001 A4), the head of the motor is prolly re-manufactured as there is no engine code on it. I need to be sure that the motor in the car is a 2001 motor as if I pick up the car I want the newer block to go 2.0L.

Apperently one way to tell is by the water pump and the other is by looking at the block stamp. I cant see the block stamp, id have to remove the intake manifold and clean up the block to see it.

If anyone can provide detailed pictures of a 2001 motor and also a 2000 motor that'd be awesome.

if its a 2001 a4, then most likely it has a 2001 motor. The coolant lines are slightly different and the engine mounts are slightly different from what i observed so swapping in a atw into the awm would be too much of a challenge to even attempt.

but to take a quick look...the water pump is in a seperate housing off the block in the atw. If the thermostat housing looks really hard to reach then you have an awm....if it looks like you can crawl under the car and reach it then its most likely the atw.

Motor replaced??? maybe they just replaced the head... My friend has a re manufactured head with no engine code stamp but it does have a part number on the head. Try to look for a part number on the head that should lead you somewhere...

Look under the IM and the thermostat housing will be right under it to the left of the knock sensor. The head is a AWM head f you see a connector on the cam chain tensioner (could be a head of a B6 too that way)

Remove the top timing belt cover (it's 2 clips). The water pump will be on the right side right by serpentine belt tensioner. That's how you will know it's an 06A block. As for the head, it will either be a large port (non-VVT) head or a small port (VVT) head. Just check behind the head for the VVT solenoid.

not all small port are vvt. and vvt is only part of the tensioner. you can make a large port head vvt.

    -coil packs different
-pcv venting from VC only on awm
-VVT solenoid sticking off the CCT

those are the top 3 easiest ways i can think of.

True, but I've never seen someone using a large port head and it didn't have AEB stamped on it.

Figured it out today in the sunlight, last night I was looking at it in a dim garage in the middle of the night. Its an 01 motor, which I am happy about =).

One big problem, the bolt down coil packs from the 2000 can be used on the 2001.

there are several other large port varieties out there. they are not all aeb. look harder.

and you never mentioned anything about engine codes. you said look at the tensioner. that will tell you if its a small port or large port. haha. whatever man.
