    Ways to shed weight?

Anyone use a lightweight battery or done other mods to drop the weight on our cars? I know I lost about 30lbs taking my golf clubs out of my trunk!

    Re: Ways to shed weight?

u can get a CF hood, CF trunk, lose the spare tire and tools and stuff, get a lightweight battery, take out ur Secondary Air pump system, use lighter seats, light wheels, light drive shaft, and so on.

oh and u can lose some weight too?

search Jet Jockey. He did all that lightweight stuff. I think he even moved his battery to the back or center of the car. That dude is crazy with that stuff. he turned his a4 into a track car.

    Re: Ways to shed weight?

man have I gone through this list before hahaha. if you're talking about things you can ditch and still retain a (mostly) full interior the list isn't nearly as long.

if you're talking about stripping down for the track or something then it's a totally different story.

some things you can take out without "tubbing out" the car are:
battery, sai, evap, pcv (parts of it), upgrading to lightweight brakes and coilovers (H&R premiums, good monoblock calipers etc), lightweight seats, removing airbags (i wouldn't recommend this... its more on the tub side of the border) removing the floor mats, trunk lining, spare tire/tools, swapping your spare tire well for a flat piece of sheet metal (no more dip), ash tray delete, single DIN head unit, arm rest delete, empty you glove box, keeping the gas right around a half tank, engine covers, air box (maybe more depending on your setup under the hood), trading the cat for a test pipe, getting an aluminum exhaust (seen it done, idk if i'd do it or not - running open DP works too), removing your washer reservoir (and all your pumps/sprayers associated with it), removing your fog lights and most of the wiring that goes with that, removing one of the horns (or both and trading out for a hella supertone or something else small and stupid loud), removing any kind of aftermarket sound system (subs), pulling up your carpet and scraping out the sound deadener then putting the carpet back, removing the battery cover, shortening/economizing all the wiring in the car, removing all the unnecessary vacuum lines/check valves (again depending on your turbo setup), lightweight wheels/tires (yes some tires are lighter than others), carbon fiber/kevlar body panels, removed/molded side mirrors, removing the upper trunk lining (who's gonna see?), removing the padding in the hood, removing the lower grills, removing the belly pan (not really recommended, it helps an ass-ton with under hood temps), lightweight flywheel, and probably a lot more things i'm forgetting....

and then if you want to talk about removing some things i talked about "replacing" all together we can get even crazier LOL

eh... and the ride is "rougher" with coilovers... but there are those of us that don't notice, and those of us that don't care if we do. (i just happen to be both)

even solid mounts, coilovers, a tubbed interior (carpet/sound deadening wise), and open DP in my friend's 240 didn't phase me. lol

Nice! Yeah, that about covers it unless you don't need your car for daily driving. B6Lovin, what do you think a car stripped like you described would weigh?

    Re: Ways to shed weight?

Weight reduction is all about what you can/can't tolerate...

The most effective things you can do for weight reduction:

-reduce rotating & unsprung weight (wheels, brakes, driveshaft/cv shafts)
-reduce weight starting from the top down, such as replacing the roofpanel with a cf panel...Pretty sure they don't make one for the B6, but here's an opportunity for you fabricators out there. That sunroof alone's gotta weigh 30+ lbs.
-Then begin taking as much weight off the nose of the car as possible.

I prefer jetjockey's approach, remove everything... speaking of, I would like to know how much his car weighs...?

I have absolutely no idea. lol

I'm gonna be doing most of that and then some on my car (what I haven't done already anyways) while at the track to try and cut some weight... I'm actually in the process of getting as many things as possible on a "quick disconnect" system. That way I can field strip the car in just a few minutes, hit the track, put it back together, and then drive home like normal.

we'll see what the final weigh in is - there's a scrap yard with a scale nearby me that lets everyone weigh in for like 10 bucks.

I basically tried to think of every part of the car from front to back, and top to bottom that could be lightened without much sacrifice.

I do remember reading somewhere that often times a certain type of caliper (though I guess I'm not sure what type) is lighter than others, even ones smaller in size.
