Anyone thought of swapping a FWD Trans into a Quattro?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
For the gearing? I like showing the community some new things, and I have this trans I can get for next to nothing. Im geussing the rear case should swap right over. What are the ratios like on the 1.8T FWD Trans?

Re: Anyone thought of swapping a FWD Trans into a Quattro?

1.8T's should all have the same ratios, FWD or Quattro. Same goes for the 2.8's.

Disclaimer, According to the internet (AllData and MitchellOnDemand) there's two different final drives. The 4.11:1 (1.8T) and 3.89:1 (2.8). I am not certain on this, but it's possible. Combining the wrong front and rear axle ratio would obviously not be a good idea.

Oh c'mon I said "according to the internet" that means I can get away with saying just about anything.

Umm, I'm not sure. I know the gearboxes and the diffs had different markings signifying the ratio that they are, but I'd have to look it up again as to what they are.

I guess that would make some sense, but then again why stick the low ratio in the bigger, more torquey engine?

only in the manual trans. The Tiptronic's are still 5sp.
The manual trans should be closer ratios as well.

The S4 6 speed has pretty tight ratios.

So the FWD cars have the same ratios for sure? Why would the Jettas and GTIs have super long ratios then?

right, does that mean the FWD A4 trans could fit in between a 1.8T and 2.8? I think I wanna get that trans lol

Go to audiworld.com. At the top go to resources and then model guide. Then A4 and pick a year like 2000 or 2001. You'll get a chart showing the options and gear ratios. FWD and Quattro are the same unless you change engines. The 2.8 ratios are roughly 6% longer.

yea. that is for the ring/pinion on the front differential. im not so sure about your idea of just throwing the housing on to the back of the fwd gearbox. i dont know if the shaft that drives the torsen for the front diff makes it to the back on a fwd gearbox. ive never had a gearbox apart before.

    3.7 versus 3.889? Weird.

I just noticed that the pic I posted says "Final Drive (Quattro)" so it may very well be different. It would be nice if we could change our final drive relatively easily. I miss the quick change rear I've had on some musclecars. All you need are a few parts and a baggie full of grease.

BoooostedA4 always posted up his max mph in each gear and they were always much higher then either quattro gear boxes. So my guess is that it has a much smaller final drive. If this is true there is no way your ever going to turn a FWD trans into a quattro since you will never find a rear diff to match even if you are able to convert the fwd trans to quattro.

there are more ratios there, i did a research on that when was converting my passat to awd.... you have to check for the gear ratio....
    they have
    37/9
    35/9
    31/8
    33/8
    41/9
    37/10
thats between the 1.8t and 2.8.... for just 2000

I think the person that posted the info was just talking about FWD cars for 1.8t and 2.8, we have already known for a long time the 2.8 quattro has the exact same final drive as the 1.8t. Audi doesn't list the final drives for either FWD but I am sure that can be found on the Passat FWD specs.

According to my Bentley repair manual:

    FWD (012/01W) Transmission
    1st - 3.500
    2nd - 2.118
    3rd - 1.300
    4th - 1.029
    5th - 0.838
    Final - 3.700

    AWD (01A) Transmission
    1st - 3.778
    2nd - 2.176
    3rd - 1.429
    4th - 1.029
    5th - 0.838
    Final - 3.889

    These are 1.8t ratios.

    These are 1.8t ratios.

Same 1st and 3rd gear ratio as the 2.8 quattro transmission but using a different final drive.

Starting the part out of the interior right now, but that's about it. I got the head together, but I need to get the turbo so we can start mocking up the t4 manifold. Also going with an ABA block and AEB crank and prossibly dry sump. And lastly, we plan on setting up an A/W intercooler with a transverse manifold (custom 90ยบ pipe for the throttle body) if the longitudinal SEM manifold isn't ready when we get to that point... Stand alone is also on the agenda.

If you can get a FWD transmission for cheap/free, I would say go for it. I've driven both the FWD and AWD A4's and they feel about the same; AWD being a little quicker off the line obviously, and the FWD catching up at the end of 2nd... but that could be because of the weight differences.

Where do you expect to find a 3.7 rear diff to match the front diff in the FWD trans?
