    Good Gas mileage?? WTH??

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
LOL, we've seen so many posts regarding poor mpg recently, so I decided to post my experience. I filled up the gas tank, reset the clock, and 420 miles later the engine light came on.

With some casual driving between highway and city (hwy 60%/City 40%) I averaged about 27 mpg!!

Note: no "spirited" driving was done on this tank of gas. I was just trying to see how many miles I could get out of the gas tank if I babied the car. However, my girlfriend did drive it for a span of about 30 miles and she has a lead foot, so maybe I could have gotten more.

    Re: Good Gas mileage?? WTH??

    Do you have any mods?

My gas mileage was about the same until my APR 1+ and now it is A LOT lower. I average about 280-300 miles per tank with 50 highway/50 city (spirited driving).
APR TIP, APR 1+, TT injectors, RaceTec FMIC, JHM Extra short throw shifter (45% reduction), ER Test Pipe, 19" OZ Ultraleggeras, B5S4 Front Calipers, Adam's Rotors with black hubs, Hawk HPS, PSS9 coilovers, Hotchkis Sways, clear corners, tint, Magnaflow Exhaust, Podi pod with SW boost gauge.

That sounds about right and is what I get with my A4 consistently (+ or - based on my highway/city driving). I have always gotten at least 400 miles per full tank.

Only mods are K&N air filter, DV, and milltek exhaust.

Got some stuff I have been waiting to be installed, but just haven't gotten around to it (bought a house 3 months ago and cant find time to do anything anymore).

I get about 400+ miles out of a tank with 80% highway driving and many hard pulls in 3rd or 4th or 5th just for fun.

If you are stock and aren't getting 400 miles on a tank you need to evaluate your driving habits. Edmunds.com states 30% increase in MPG by your driving. Only 10% tire pressure and I think 10% a/c

    Re: Good Gas mileage?? WTH??

^ fill up your tank. Reset your trip computer, drive. More you drive the better, more accurate reading you will get. Fill up. Take note on how much gas it took to fill up. Take note on what the reading on the trip computer. reset your trip computer. Divide the mileage off the trip computer by the gallons of gas and you will get your MPG for that tank. Do this for a month and add all the numbers up and divide it by how many numbers you added up and you will get an average for a month.

    EX:
    200 miles, took 10 gallons. divide 200 by 10 = 20 mpg. let's say the next few tanks for the month were 21, 23, 20. so you add 20, 21, 23 and 20. You get 84, divide that by 4 (4 tanks)= 22MPG average.

    your kiding right?

    mpg= miles per gallon

therefore divide total trip odometer reading (in miles) by total fuel consumed (in gallons)

dawg you gotta be hittin the turbo a lot or driving the 3.0, cause i get better mileage than you in my 2.8 vr6 doing 100% city driving. If i baby it and ride in a higher gear i average like 23 or 24. So if you're lucky to be getting 19 stock... you must be putting more lead on the pedal than you think.

But if any of you want to feel better about your mileage, just drive around a large truck or SUV for a while. My cousin has a 04 F350 super duty with the 7.3 liter turbo diesel on a 6" lift and 38" toyo M/T on 19's. And he chipped it, so he's lucky to get 11 mpg if he babies that sucker lol. Shit my parents drive an 04 tahoe LT w/ stabilitrac AWD on 21's and average 12 mpg, and they're conservative drivers as well.

Ah, one better...LOL Not to be that A-hole that has a better story, but here:
    My friend has two guzzlers:

    1) 200? Firebird WS 6.0 moderately modded (bolt-ons with a MSD ignition system) gets 10 MPG.
    2) 1998 GMC Z71 raise to the 42" on Mickey Thompson Baja Tires with a Supercharger. Totally custom suspension, Ford lockers on a straight Axle (Ford) With the GM diff, gets 8 MPG no matter where he drives it.

These vehicles are currently permanent fixtures on his driveway and the Mini Cooper gets all the petrol...

    Re: Good Gas mileage?? WTH??

^^ haha yeah with my cousin's truck the only reason he's lucky to get 11 mpg is cause he's riding diesel. And i'm thinking that seeing as how my parents are getting 12 on the 5.7 vortec, he must be getting MUCH lower than that with his chipped 7.0 liter turbo on such big wheels. I'm 6 ft and when i stand next to it the hood is like an inch taller than i am lol. I think 11 is being really gracious.

I've never seen better than 300 miles out of a tank. I have Tip/Quattro. I'm now chipped and regularly get 250-275 miles before the gas light comes on with city driving. I drive very conservatively and do not go WOT at all.

How is that? Please share with us, I think it's an impossibility...

The car has a 17.4 gallon tank, with 2.1 gallon reserve, so empty will show once you are down 15.3 gallons...

I just drove my car for the last 400 miles and filled up 14.95 gallons, so 26.75 mpg, not too bad, but I'd like to do more.

If you used up 17.4 gallons and did 550 miles, it'd come out to 31.6 mpg which is beyond the rating of the car (isn't it? :-).

Not necessarily. The car is rated for highway (high speed) and city (stop and go) but there is a different range that allows for the best gas mileage. If you drive in the 35-60mph range without much (if any) stops then you sit in the range for the best gas mileage which i get all the time. On my commute to work i average 40mph with very little stopping and always get between 30-34mpg.

Once you start going above 60mph, the wind resistance on your car increases exponentially compared to your speed.

There you are my good man.

Although I am relatively stock and FWD it gets surprisingly good mileage. I know it would be worse if the car were quattro/automatic/modded. But I drive fairly conservative 99% of the time. I keep the maintenance up on it so it really does run like a top. I've been running my a/c quite a bit lately and I added a roof rack so I am getting more along the lines of 510 but I still can't complain. Heres what it looks like now.

    Re: Good Gas mileage?? WTH??

When I bought my baby brand new, I got 600 miles to one tank.
But that was a farce. It never happened again.

I think my manifold leak is killing my MPG right now.

Otherwise, I get 350-400 per tank under normal circumstances.

I'm actually kinda surprised that i get 30-34mpg myself too because i'm driving at a mile high in altitude in denver in a car that was originally sold in Ohio.
