EMERGENCY HELP!!! I think my torque converter blew up...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I left early this morning for my cross country trip and 200 miles into it my car slammed from 5th gear into 4th and now it won't stay in 5th. I talked to someone that said it happened to his car and he said it was his torque converter. I need a new torque converter ASAP.

    Who can help me out?

Have you checked your trans fluid to see if it's topped off? Low fluid can make an automatic transmission do strange things.

Did your tranny downshifted by it self ie. like ''bang''? Or did it downshifted b/c of too high rpm range vs mph ie; slip within t/c ?

Yeah but what was your rpm's while you were in 5th before it downshifted by it self? IT's very important to know, b/c a friend of my which has a gray s4 tip had a failed t/c 4 months ago and it never downshifted like you state.

You can check them. You need your car on good jack stands or a lift. start your engine and let it idle. Remove the big 17mm halen in the big hole under your tranny oil pan ( don't worry it wont leak). Let it idle until tranny oil temp reach between 35-45c. It should began to leak from the hole within this temp. If not, you oil level is too low. Mine began too leak at 38c which is good. It could take long before temp rise. I took a friend that hold the brakes while pressing on gaz in 'D' which create heat in t/c and thereby raise oil temp.

bring it from the past post...

i recently replaced my radiator on my auto car and the radiator has the transmission fluid cooling function and there's lines going into / from the radiator to do just that. my concern is if there is any risk of driving the car as is for a day or two without topping off the auto trans fluid that was drained / leaked / not topped off after the radiator replacement... i have yet to drive the car in the excess of 40 mph and have yet (crossing my fingers) to encounter anything our of orinary from the transmission / TQ... i will have to drive it tomorrow & possibly over the weekend before i can fill / top off the transmission fluid by what was prescribed above...jack up the car at a level and warm up trans fluid until desired temp and monitor for leak or lack there of and refill as necessary...

any inputs are welcome & appreciated...TIA...!!!

When a tip car experiences a change in elevation it will automatically drop a gear (hard) if you dont apply more load to maintain rpm. Is this possible??
Were you going up a hill, over a bridge any incline? This has happened to me a few times and it is quite scary. It doesnt have to be a steep incline either..

Also use the tip mode stay out of full auto. Tip increases pressure and will help with cleaner shifting.

I think the problem is that you've never known what the question is.

42 is the answer to "The Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything" As described in Douglas Adam's The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. However the original question was long forgotten. Hence soundpool's remark.

    I was being nice..

I'm just commenting on your requirement to get instant gratification to your questions posted in others' unrelated threads. It's been less than 12 hours since you posted that question so why not give people time to read and respond and pick threads more relevant to what your trying to ask.

This is not the first time you've done it.

    geees...settle down...

i do want to check out that movie tho...

12 hrs i thought was too long given that i don't want to ruin the car/tranny by driving the heck out of it without the tranny fluid topped up quite full...

i was experiencing a slipping T/C about 4 months ago. there was no BANG and down shift, IF your T/C did fail, then what you probably saw was your RPM's jump way up, and that's it, it wouldn't downshift with a bang, or nothing, it may go back to normal with some slipping, and start slipping more as you go uphill or accelerate. But a failing T/C will not keep it from going into 5th, unless its really screwed up or the computer put it into limp mode or something like that.
On a tip, one way to find out if your low on oil that results in your T/C slipping.. .Don't laugh at me too much, but how I found out, is doing a left turn around a round-a-bout, going as fast as i could around the circle without tipping/sliding side ways (+/- 28mph) and while going around the circle, hit your accelerator, if your low on fluid, your gonna see your RPM's go WAY up due to T/C slipping. What happens is G force kicks the oil to one side of the transmission. If your fluid isn't low then your car will accelerate like normal, as it does now after my problem has been resolved.
