Engine became noisy then CEL today

My car is becoming real noisy, from the engine bay. It sounds like a clicky sound, the kind of sound a child makes when they imitate a machine gun. The sound appears to be on the engine side closest to the passenger/driver seats, around that area. The sound has gotten worse and worse and now my check engine light is on.

Still spike 19-21 psi, and hold at 17-18psi.

I just changed my oil/filter, engine mounts, coolant gasket. Car seems to be running fine but to me it feels like a ticking time bomb(CEL and noise).

Beach house imports had said that my oil pickup tube (?) needs to be replaced because it is clogged. They at $650. Then they said... if its not that its the tensioner(?).

Basically at 100k miles.

Mine is doing the same thing but from under the hood. It's only when I boost at 15 to 17psi thru second and third gear. I'm trying to figure that out as well. Anyone? It sounds like it's coming from the drivers side waste gate, small clicking when almost full boost.

I don't think its the oil I'm using either, even though its incredibly thin(0w-30). I guess I have to change the pick up tube for 650 dollars. sigh.

ok my car is also doing the same thing... it has been driving me crazy... i have tried and tried to find the source but i havent had much luck since i cant stick my head in the engine bay while i am driving... i thought it might be the cats going out but i just had audi check it and they said that they were fine... any ideas at all what it is anyone?

What DTC is causing the CEL to light up?

Is the noise constant or does it vary with engine speed (ie: gets louder or faster when the engine revs off idle).

It sounds similiar but not nearly as bad. Withel the pick up tube replacement I hope that the change in pressure will allow the tensioner to work properly, or at least more properly.

Do you guys think I cam drive it for 100 miles???

sometimes the pieces of the tensioner break down and clog the pick up tube, but according to my service manager they will disintigrate eventually. THe underlying problem in my case was the tensioner.

If you a have an oil light on, it is probably oil related, maybe your pump is on its way out, the pick up tube is clogged or you have sludge issues.

Check if the oil pressure is ok, also open up your valve cover gasket and inspect the oil, inspect the tensioner or take pics and post them here.

Good luck...I know how frustrating this is for you as I recently went through it.

In my case however, I have a CEL rather than a oil light.

Recently I checked my codes. Forgot to right any down.

there were three of them...

1) o2 sensor

2) boost pressure (i think)

3) running lean


I don't think fixing the pickup tube is going to turn of the CEL now. But I know i need to change it. Sigh.

I'd tow that thing to someone qualified. It sounds like you're killing your engine. I had a noise on a Volvo that was my timing belt slacking up because the tensioner went. I drove it less than a mile to a mechanic and needed to buy a new (used) engine, or get a valve job on a 20 valve engine. Thousands of $.

Check that. I just watched the video. That's not the timing belt tensioner. I don't know what that noise is...but it doesn't sound like the engine is misfiring or running on less than 4 cylinders. However, I still would not drive it 100 miles...or anything more than 10 miles until I knew what it was.

Vacuum leak it was.

02 sensor went bad.

Also, just to add to the "search" database. I had a similiar sound to the video posted but not as bad. The oil pickup tube worked! I probably have to do a sludge flush, but my car is going back to healthyness, yay.

In the mean time, I was driving a bmw 328i 2007 sedan. Power delivery and smoothness was fantastic. I'm becoming a bimmer fan more and more these days. But, I can't wait to my audi back, its just not the same without quattro. I'm not accostumed to the wheel slip.
