Like others have said, really glad you were able to get it remedied before any serious damage took place. I honestly had no idea the rattling was coming from the water pump, I thought it was just a heat shield vibrating. Had I known, it would've been fixed before I even posted the sale ad. The timing belt was indeed replaced at 60K. A few friends and I did the ECS ultimate kit in August '05.
Pics here to show it being done. The original water pump had a plastic impeller. It seemed strange at the time to replace it with the supplied metal one, but we did it anyway assuming that new = better. I don't know what to say about the loose nut, I remember checking everything very carefully. Either we didn't torque it enough or forgot that it existed. It must not have been one of the main nuts/bolts for it to have been leak-free for 3 years...? Really sorry that you had to be the one to deal with it. On the bright side, you've knocked it out and have another 60K before you have to worry about it again (hopefully!).
