So my overheating issue was quite obvious

Well a week ago after Felipe and i had some runs my car over heats and dumps Coolant EVERYWHERE. The water pump Freeze plug popped we found out after the front end came off. Once we pulled it off i couldnt fucken believe it. The pulley and impellar were BENT. to the point where the impellar was grinding against the rear of the housing. Thank god the impellar didnt damage the block. Also whoever did the first water pump job left a bolt loose on the water pump.

The timing belt was loose as hell and the tensioner and piston were in horrible shape. Anyway heres a few pics of the water pump. I am glad i found it the way i did because i was worried, the car had a rattling almost like piston rattle sound to it. ended up the water pump was bad the entire time.

Wow amasing. Last time i found a water pump like this was on a 88 f150 with the l6 engine. The bearings were destroyed. The water pump was leaking well before failling tho.

Timing belt was a little beat up had one nice tear. the sensioner was in the process of dying and the pulley was loose. the TB had a lot of slack.

we did the "ultimate" kit job on it and now its SICK

    thought so

I have yet to hear of any good metal impeller water pumps for our cars

when I had one, the bearings went out after 20k miles

I think your very lucky it didnt snap the TB and toast your heads. Its not a cheap fix having to replace the water pump again but you could of spent many more thousands if the timing belt broke.

I hope your replacing everything again for a timing belt job. If your going to be in there might as well do it right.

Anytime you see any coolant leak where you think its coming from the waterpump area, or hear any weird noises I wouldnt drive it another foot until you get the problem checked. The timing belt is nothing to play around with.

    At least thats my opinion.

Re: So my overheating issue was quite obvious

Goingtoscott, i had no leaks whatsover until the car overheated that night. I didnt know what the clanky noise was until we pulled the water pump. when we took it off there was a nut that was completely loose. Also the Timing belt has a nice 1/4 inch rip across. The tensioner failed and there was slack in the TB. not enough to make it jump but holy hell..... Now everything is awesome. Runs like a champ now no noise no heating and peace of mind that we redit it right.

Changed all the pulleys, Tensioner, Tensioner roller. Timing belt. Water pump and everything else that has bearings. Fixed some other minor stuff.

Theres 107 k on the car, previous owner says everything was changed at 60k. Either it wasnt a very well done job or it wasnt done at all.

Re: So my overheating issue was quite obvious

Like others have said, really glad you were able to get it remedied before any serious damage took place. I honestly had no idea the rattling was coming from the water pump, I thought it was just a heat shield vibrating. Had I known, it would've been fixed before I even posted the sale ad. The timing belt was indeed replaced at 60K. A few friends and I did the ECS ultimate kit in August '05. Pics here to show it being done. The original water pump had a plastic impeller. It seemed strange at the time to replace it with the supplied metal one, but we did it anyway assuming that new = better. I don't know what to say about the loose nut, I remember checking everything very carefully. Either we didn't torque it enough or forgot that it existed. It must not have been one of the main nuts/bolts for it to have been leak-free for 3 years...? Really sorry that you had to be the one to deal with it. On the bright side, you've knocked it out and have another 60K before you have to worry about it again (hopefully!).

Re: So my overheating issue was quite obvious

that looks like a classic aftermarket pump failure. Looks like a graf pump to me. I won't use them and have seen it happen after 10k. Glad you got so lucky. Most people don't.
