    B6 S4 headlight differences

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey, I'm looking at purchasing a set of B6 S4 headlights and need some info. Are all S4 headlights Bi-xenon? Are only the Bi-xenon headlights self levelling? If the light is self levelling, are the cutoff's actuated separately?

I am looking to do a retrofit on my B6 Avant and realize the self levelling won't work but would like to have the Bi-xenon option. So if anyone would care to get me up to speed on teh diffferences it would be appreciated!

Im pretty sure all s4 are bixenons with the grey inner housing. There are 2 versions of them, one version has a larger projector lens. You will still have the bixenon function, the cutoff is only a metal plate inside the projector that folds down when u activate the high beam.

I have s4 grey housings and I don't have bixenons. That means both regular and hi beams are xenon right? My his are halogen.

The larger lenses are bixenon, the smaller lenses are not.

When equipped from factory, all xenon headlights are self leveling.

Don't worry, the xenon high beams work independently of auto leveling.

Bi-Xenons are easy to recognize, they're all dark gray (no chrome version) and the projector lens is very big. There are only two version, the European version (E-Code/ECE) and the US version (DOT) that has the ugly amber reflectors (that should be removed for best appearance).

people get mixed up about bixenons. Bixenons mean the low function as highs also . The regular highs are still halogen bulbs .

So if I have the s4 housings, does that automatically mean I have bixenons?

The high beam reflectors are all halogen, on all versions of all B6 headlights. Bi-Xenons still use them as secondary high beams.

^^if ur high beams are so bright u can blind someone in front of u, and they start swerving, that means u have bi-xenons lol.

They are pretty bright. But my regular headlights are actually kind of weak imo.

Wrong. Later S4s (like my 2005) have bixenon lowbeams, earlier S4 headlights have non-bixenon lowbeams. Both have halogen highbeams, the bixenon lights supplement the halogen highbeams with more light from the xenon lowbeams.

'single ' xenon: ballast on bottom, two 'doors' on back of housing
bi-xenon: ballast on rear of housing, larger main projector

S4s came with both types depending on build date (earlier ones were single). both types are gray interior.

    Re: B6 S4 headlight differences

All US S4's come with grey xenon housings, in 2005 the bi-xenons became standard; the bi-xenons have a much larger lens and still have halogen highbeams aswell, though they are not nearly as bright (the bulb is much smaller, normally used in fog lights)

    Re: B6 S4 headlight differences

Thanks for all the input. So if I understand this correctly, if the housing has the larger projector it should be Bi-xenon. The cutoff does actuate indepedantly from the levelling motor so I can easily have that functioning. The leveling motor will not work on non factory equipped cars. The housing color is not important to me. Is there a how to on removing the amber reflectors?

Correct. My S4 headlights are just xenon main beam (low). There are no moving parts in the xenon beam to make them bi. My headlight housings were made in 2003, when I bought them.
