    Brief question about the RNS-E

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So in terms of the SD cards, I have 2 questions. First is, is it true the system does not work with cards larger than 2 GB? cause I have a pair of 4 gig cards coming in the mail that I don't want to have wasted, and I have almost 70 gigs of music so frankly 4 gigs in my car just wont cut it.

Also, and perhaps more importantly, is a question pertaining to the formatting of the MP3's on said SD cards. I'll do my best to explain the issue, but it is kinda hard:

On my computer I load music up on the SD card by created an artist folder, then creating album folders within the artist, and then dumping the tracks from my iTunes into their corresponding album folders in MP3 format. When I put the SD cards in the RNS-E, however, within the album folder appears two copies of the track list from the album. The first set I believe is labeled with a hyphen, and then after the first hyphen copy is another copy thats labeled more traditionally with the 01 (Song name), 02 (Song name), etc. When I open a folder in the RNS-E and if i select the first of the hypenated songs to play, which are the ones at the top of the list, the stereo starts skipping tracks as if it were playing an albums worth of 0 second tracks, and then only starts playing when it actually reaches the start of the songs labeled traditionally.

I hope that explains what I'm talking about. With that being said, my question is what am I doing wrong that causes those "hollow" tracks to be at the top of the list?

Sorry if I wasn't that clear.

Bump. Honestly, for those who know the answer to this question, reading the question is definitely the longest part about answering it.

Re: Brief question about the RNS-E

The first question: You can use all 2GB cards without a problem. 4GB cards on the other hand are in the SDHC format, and very rarely there are 4GB cards that are not SDHC.

It will be written all over the package of your SD cards if it is SDHC. Most players cannot handle the HC, including the RNS-E. However you may have been lucky and got the non HC ones, which will work in the RNS-E.

Second question: I'm confused/too lazy to understand. Sorry!

Re: Brief question about the RNS-E

The only thing I can think of is when you're dumping the songs you're doing it as albums so it tries to create an album in your album folder.
What if you just created artist folders? Have you tried that?

Re: Brief question about the RNS-E

RNS is my thing. I know lots about it.

First, I have a 4 GB card that is non-HC. There are only a few. You may have to return the ones you've ordered.

Second, the RNS was designed to work with 256 MB cards, so the GB cards are pretty big. The RNS will read around 400 items total. Folders and playlists count as items. More folders=less space for music. From my experience, the magic number is 3. If there was a 3 GB card, it would be perfect. But that's not the case. You can fill a 2 gb card up and have access to all the songs. If you fill up a 4 gb card, u will not see all the music.

I have seen what u describe. Are u on a mac or pc? If u are on a mac, I would recommend synctunes. It's a free DL. If ur on a pc, look for a program that makes playlists for PDAs and such.

I use synctunes, and don't have that ghosting issue anymore. I can tell u more when I get home. I typed all this on my crackberry :)

Re: Brief question about the RNS-E

well god damn the cards came in the mail today and they are in fact HC. I suppose I'll look into finding another pair of 4 gig cards, this time not HC. I'll also see what I cant do with synctunes. I'm on a mac by the way. What would it cost to get ipod integration on the RNS-E?

Re: Brief question about the RNS-E

this is the 4GB SD card I use with my RNS-E

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820163159

I also have the .zip file for synctunes...I forgot they don't make it available any more...PM me your email address if any of you want the .zip file

another note about the 4GB cards. They will take some time to load when you turn the car on. The RNS-E will read the entire card before music starts to play. More music=more waiting. I have a 4Gb card and a 2GB card in slot 2. Even if you have a huge music selection, you'll probably only want a few things when driving. Synctunes makes it easy, just make a playlist of an album, or have a big playlist to random search from.

I have issues with the iPod interface from Audi. First, you don't see any track names. Second, you get the first 5 playlists with track 00 to track99. So, that's 100 songs times 5. Then, the 6th is the entire ipod, no names, just Track00 and so on. It's just like you had a CD changer. It's not worth it IMHO. I may change my SD cards once in a while. When I get new music, I just make a CD for the car if I don't have time to put it onto one of my SD cards. I may have only 3 CDs in the car changer at most.

Re: Brief question about the RNS-E

Yeah its funny that you linked me that SD card cause I went on newegg and bought a pair of exactly those as soon as i realized the SDHC's wouldn't work. And yeah, I noticed the delay when the car would start up. I have 70 gigs of music on my ipod, but i think i can whittle it down to 6-8 gigs that i want. I'll just have to deal with the start up delay. And I think I'll have enough smaller SD cards to just swap out cards as if they were CD's. Does the CD changer read MP3 CD's?

PS. I want that .dmg. You got PM.

    thanks buddy

nope, the CD player does not support mp3 playback.

.zip file has been sent! Let me know if you can't figure out how to work the program...took me a minute to get it the way I want.

    anytime!

Another good thing, since it sounds like you have a mac... look into blueharvest. Gets rid of all those little useless files macs throw onto SD cards that sometimes show up in the folders on the RNS-E. I've also found running my SD cards through the cleaner after putting music on significantly reduced chances of any weird things happening.

    ngng has the right idea...

check out this guy who did it with a DVD player where the stock CD changer use to be.

    http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...threadid=72440

Now, I've spoken with the guy, and he said that the nav uplink really gets messed up when you're doing VIM. That's why you have to have a switch to turn it on and off. Some people have had problems with VIM. I was gonna do it to my car, but I didn't want to "mess it up"

I've thought about VIM, but I have no desire to mess with my RNS-E.

I think when I buy the B5 (next purchase), I will install and AVIC and mess with that, in that car.
