    Question Recall Question ??

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Went to the dealer for my 5K service, oil change and tire rotation on an '08 2.0T Avant. The service manager told me I needed a recall done and he wasn't sure what it was.
When I went back to get it he told me they had to order the parts and I would have to come back, but he still didn't know what it was about,no big as I get an Audi loaner.
So the invoice says 91D4 recall, parts ordered.
Anyone know what this is ???

One more question, anyone know how the rain sensors work (besides good)
just wondering where they are and how they function.

    Thanks
    Peter

    Re: Recall Question ??

You can look up recall information on the NHTSA website: www.safecar.gov.

Here is the only recall listed for an '08 Avant:

    Make : AUDI Model : A6 AVANT Year : 2008

Manufacturer : VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA, INC Mfr's Report Date : JUL 23, 2007
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 07V334000
    N/A
    NHTSA Action Number: N/A
    Component: STRUCTURE:BODY:TRUNK LID
Potential Number Of Units Affected : 23898

    Summary:
ON CERTAIN PASSENGER AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE AUTOMATIC REAR LID INCLUDES AN ELECTRIC MOTOR AND CLUTCH THAT WORK IN CONJUNCTION WITH TWO GAS STRUTS TO OPEN AND CLOSE THE REAR LID, INCLUDING A MANUAL CLOSE FUNCTION. IF ONE OF THE STRUTS HAS A TOTAL LOSS OF PRESSURE, THE RESULTANT SLOW MOVEMENT OF THE REAR LID IS INTERPRETED BY THE SOFTWARE AS AN INTENDED MANUAL CLOSE AND THE MOTOR CLUTCH RELEASES TO CLOSE THE REAR LID IMMEDIATELY.

    Consequence:
THIS CAN RESULT IN AN UNINTENDED RAPID CLOSING OF THE REAR LID WITH A RISK OF PERSONAL INJURY.

    Remedy:
DEALERS WILL INSTALL NEW SOFTWARE FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 14, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT AUDI AT 1-800-822-2834.

    Notes:
VOLKSWAGEN RECALL NO. JV. CUSTOMERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV.

The rain sensors turn on by putting the wiper selector (on right side of steering column) in the 2nd position.

In other words, 1st position would be OFF. 2nd position is one click up (rain sensor activation), 3rd position is one click up (slow).

    Positions:
    4: High
    3: Low
    2: Rain Sensor Activated
    1: OFF
0: Mist (this is when you push the selector down to run the wipers once real quick. The selector goes back into position 1)

(3 and 4 might be something else, there might even be a 5th position. I don't know because I just leave mine on Rain Sensor or Off all the time)

Then you control the sensitivity by moving the toggle switch that is on the wiper selector. Selector down is least sensitive, up is most.

    Hope this helps.

I believe the sensor is in the rear view mirror housing on the inside of the windshield. Not sure how it works though... maybe it's a voltage and rain lowers the resistance.

Infrared light is shot at the windscreen by the sensor, rain on the glass means less of the light is reflected back. Some dude with a propeller hat worked out at what point the loss of return light means its raining

    Re: Recall Question ??

That's odd , it's an A4, I found the A6 recall, I'll have to pin them down on that.

That propellor head was really thinking !! Sometimes mine come on for a cycle or two when there is no visible moisture so I was wondering.

Exactly correct. This is how it works. If the area where the rearview mirror connects to the window is too dirty, your wipers will start going on at random times (when there is no rain). Keep that area clean.
