    Wrapping Test Pipe?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Is there really any noticeable difference wrapping a test pipe? I have a Evolution Racewerks Test Pipe stainless. I heard that wrapping the downpipe after the turbo increases air velocity due to the higher tempatures. So in theory quicker spool? I have wrapped stuff in the pas and besides keeping my under hood temps down (Very noticeable) I did not really notice a difference. I still have a new thing of wrap with the stainless clamps left over from another project. So cost is not a issue. Anyone ever run a turbo cover (Insulated bag)?

BTW I have a APR stage 1+ will they flash my check engine light away?

    These guys sell custom bags.

    Re: Wrapping Test Pipe?

I'd wrap everything I could... Our turbo sits right next to our intake, so getting that area as cool as possible is always good. Id love to wrap my TP but I really don't want to take it out.

    Re: Wrapping Test Pipe?

Doubt your going to find a turbo blanket small enough for the stock turbo. As for wrapping the TP, every bit you can help lower air temps in the engine bay, the better off you are. Not only for power gains but also for the longevity of the various plastic pieces, check valves, hoses, etc.

lee did his gt28rs and wrapped his test pipe... i think he said it greatly reduced underhood temps and lowered his spool time.. but thats on a gt28rs, i think all you would see on a k03 is lower underhood temps

Be careful with wrapping. I have heard that if not done perfectly moisture can get through and cause problems. Have been told that ceramic coating would be the best bet IIRC.

    +1 for ceramic coating

the big downfall with wrapping is trapping too much heat and cracking... It may not be an issue with this car since there aren't many bends, and I'll make the dangerous assumption that they probably use a pretty thick gauge steel. ...and if there were any reports of cracking...10 people would've chimed in by now with thier stories... I do remember a dsm guy who wrapped everything from the hotside down...had a leak on the oil inlet of the turbo...it soaked the wrap...got too hot one day...started a little fire (not sure what exactly started it, but I know WE didn't (billy joel reference)) that did some fun damage to the engine bay...

not sure where I was going with all this other then to state a bunch of useless facts... happy wrapping!

    ceramic > wrapping IMO

    Re: Wrapping Test Pipe?

Wrap sprayed with the silicone stuff or whatever that stuff is dries the wrapping to rock hard status. Almost like a cast on a broken arm. Anything spilled on my wrap wipes right off.
Mine did everything it claims to. Lowered temps big time and decreased RPM at full spool by about 150-200rpm.
Ceramic is cool, but wrapping I can DIY. This included a nice turbo blanket.
It just needs to be done really tight. Half-assed or trying to do it without removing the parts from the car isn't going to cut it.

Back when I had my catalytic converter, I wrapped that while it was in the car. My hands are not that tiny either, lol. I soaked the wrap in water first and then just took my time wrapping it. It took quite a while and my hands were fairly cut up...but it sure did work.

Now, i have a test pipe, and wrapped it before I put it on....but it is definetly easy to put while still on the car.

After a long drive, the engin ebay is no where near as hot as it used to be!

    Re: Wrapping Test Pipe?

I have had many things ceramic coated. In my opinion it does not do anywhere near the job wrap does. Don't believe go and flog on your car come back and put your hand on your test pipe. Yeah you can't... If it's wrapped you can! That should be enough proof. Ceramic coatings IMHO are better at anti-corrosion than keep heat out!

OH YEAH NEVER CERAMIC COAT Headers on the inside only out. If that coating flakes it goes right into your turbo. Of course K03's are cheap:)

    Re: Wrapping Test Pipe?

Somewhat old thread, but I plan on wrapping my test pipe during my BT install. Is this something that can be picked up locally at an auto parts stores or Home Depot or something? I was looking to order some online but at Summit Racing it cost more to ship than the wrap did.

Make sure you wet it down good and stretch it as far as you can. It will help it shrink tight as it heats up

It's hotter because it's doing what it's designed to do... which is keep the heat in the pipe and now allow it to escape into your engine bay.... heat wrap is allowing it vent more so then a ceramic coated pipe that's why it's cooler to the touch...

    Re: Wrapping Test Pipe?

Really??? I have to disagree The underhood temps have been significantly lower. The reason most do ceramic over wrap is anti corrosion and metal fatigue. I actually log my temps with a subaru I had. Started with ceramic coated stainless steel pipe. Then wrapped it HUGE difference. Maybe when you actually did it there was a reason why your results were scewed like improperly installed wrap?

Did mine prior to install. Pretty easy and I think I only used about 12-13ft of the wrap. I didn't wet it b4 I wrapped it either.

    Re: Wrapping Test Pipe?

mine's wrapped too - and the manifold is coated. gonna look into getting a turbo blanket sometime soon for a little "added protection"

so far it's been great. I've wrapped a bunch of crap on friends' cars so i kinda knew what to expect. the next time my car is on a lift I'll probably wrap from my TP/DP flange down to the end of the tranny just to keep my axle boots nice and cool and to try and get even more heat out of my engine bay.

toyed with the idea of wrapping my WG dump tube... but it's just autozone flex-exhaust. so w/e (cost me 25 bucks start to finish... that's including getting it welded onto a pipe/flange, and the hardware to put it on. hahaha)

oh, and slight thread jack - but the 3" sounds SO much better than my old 2.5... and i get compliments on the single exit exhaust everywhere i go. (don't even have the other side molded yet lol)
