    Blown-Turbo prevention

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just out of curiosity and desire for knowledge, what are the causes of a blown Turbo? and what can be done to avoid that to happen again after a new Turbo replacement? Lastly, if you have your car chipped, what can you do to prevent the Turbo to blow up (considering the two are related)?

Thanks for any feedback (and sorry if my Qs are little beginner level, am still in the learning phase)

    Re: Blown-Turbo prevention

if you are running the b6 1.8T, then id have to say doing frequent oil changes because this particular motor is prone to engine sludge that can clog up the line leading up to the turbo. im a bit new to audi's and tuning so thats all i can think of right now.

let your turbo warm up and cool down, just let it idle for a minute or two everytime you cold start it and everytime you turn the car off.

Is it really necessary to let the engine idle for a minute or two before shutting it off if you don't really push it hard? I kinda feel like a retard just sitting in my car doing nothing after I park it.

isn't THAT necessary with just a stock (k03) turbo... but you can always get a turbo timer and like you said, "don't look like a retard just sitting in your car".

    Re: Blown-Turbo prevention

What about the causes that will make the Turbo and cat get oil from the engine? I believe that was my case, but what would be causing that from the beginning?

I mentioned this to the dealer 3 times within 3 months that my engine is losing oil on a regular basis, but they always said that its normal until the car started smoking at 4000 RPM.. too late by then.

Am now tired of it, and starting to learn and read about the inner things of cars, I want to be able to do checks and do things myself.

EVERYTIME the dealer takes my car in, he gets it out with problems I never had before. After he replaced the turbo, not sure what they did, but it seems that the source of vibrational noise I have now when the car is on Drive (and idle) is from the left engine mount (and not a tube hitting the oil filter as we thought previously). When someone else presses on the engine toward the ground, that noise is gone. Lets see what they going to do about that.

    Re: Blown-Turbo prevention

I despise letting other touch my cars..... Even if the car is under warranty! They scratch it or cause some other issue! It seems like they just do not care nearly as much as I do. Isn't that always the case in life.

Don't get an AFE intake. It has leaky seal causing unmetered air to enter the motor causing it to run lean which likely why I've had two turbo failures in the past 3 months.

Heat - Let your engine idle for ~ 2 minutes after a spirited or hard drive, at least minute otherwise so you don't cut off the much needed oil. This prevents the turbo from "coking".
