I was just told that I have a blown head gasket, I knew this would happen.
114000 miles what do I do now? Is it worth fixing?
How much is it going to cost me?

DIY is not that bad for someone who hasnt done any major work before. There is a DIY on here you can search by "Rosati" he did head removal thread. all you gotta buy is new head bolts ~$60, and new head gasket ~$40. do the math.
plus you have us if you have any questions. i would do it for you but i am all the way on the east coast.

You need a helper or 2 to lift the head as its heavy and en engine hoist helps too.

*looks at head sitting behind chair*

It is not THAT heavy, lets not be ridiculous.
Its not that hard to remove, you just need a timing belt kit. The entire front needs to come off, and then its like a dozen head studs you need to undo with a special audi tool. I suggest you do this with someone who knows what their doing, last thing you'd need is to fuck up your timing.

If you pull it with the turbo, DP, IM, etc its fairly heavy plus u don't want to chip or scrach anything when maneuvering it yourself.

the head is not heavy. you can disconnect the turbo to exhaust mani and then the intake mani. lift and walla is out. well not really, timing belt needs to come off.

    They are charging $1,300.

Re: OH NO!!!! Blown head gasket

Its a solid day's worth of work plus parts (see below).

    8hrs * 100-120/hr = $800-960
    head bolts ($40)
    head gasket
    valve cover gasket
    intake mani gasket
exhaust mani gasket (ie: complete gasket set $99)

You're getting close to $1300. Sounds somewhat reasonable.

EDIT: You're at 114k. Might want to start thinking about a Timing Belt kit. It'll be easier to throw that in there while you're replacing the head gasket. Should only be the additional cost for parts. (I, personally, book-keep a TB interval of 60k)

I'm going to ask them to do that and a new snub mount while they are in there.

Re: OH NO!!!! Blown head gasket

I'm scrawny and I did it myself with the manifold attached. It's maybe 60-80 pounds so it isn't light but it isn't impossible. Disconnect everything, lay a few rags or old towels on the workbench, and in one smooth motion pull it off and lay it back down. Lay it upside down, on it's side, or up on a couple books so you don't trash any valves.

    You'll need:
    - full timing belt kit
    - oil change stuff
    - gallon jug of coolant
    - head bolt tool
    - replacement head bolts
    - valve cover gasket, head gasket

You might also need to have the head machined for flatness. To check this you'll need to clean up the head surface and lay a real straight edge on it. Then take a .001 or .002" feeler gauge and see if it slides under it anywhere. You could also shine a light from the backside to check for gaps.

Re: OH NO!!!! Blown head gasket

Well I'm not saying I can't do it but I have very little experience to do it my self.
I'm not saying I don't DIY but with something like this I really don't know, not to mention I have classes starting soon so I would like to get it done as soon as possible.
Plus this place seems to do good work, I just really hope I am covered for this other wise I'm paying out of pocket.

If not well looks like I'll do it my self and use the jeep or something the bus I dont know.
Like I said if any body is near by and wants to spend a weekend fixing some other duded car hey your welcome to help me out.

Re: OH NO!!!! Blown head gasket

ok well insurance wont cover me, that sucks. So I guess I'm paying out of pocket $1200+
Not sure if thats a good price but it needs to get done. I have school coming up and I still have to pay for classes. This really sucks, not to mention I have surgery soon and my insurance wont cover me unless I'm a full time student, but I still have to work so that means night classes for me. Wow what a predicament this really sucks and this better fix my over heating problem.

Add a new thermostat to your TB kit for good measure and to rule out the T-stat possibly being your over-heating problem.

So they definitely confirmed that the head gasket is bad? Maybe you can save it with a new thermostat?

Re: OH NO!!!! Blown head gasket

No, I did the Tstat and the coolant sensor flushed the radiator water pump seemed to be working. Then I took it to the mechanic and he told me I had some torn up pipes and the head gasket was busted. So now I'm paying total including all I have done to stop her from over heating about $1700.
Then I still need to pay for college which is starting soon.
But I guess it could be worse...
    I could be dead.

Re: OH NO!!!! Blown head gasket

Seems kind of odd to have a blown head gasket on a stock motor and no other signs of a blown head gasket other than the engine overheats. Usually, there is coolant and/or oil leaking into other parts of the engine when a head gasket blows and causes overheating... How did the mechanic determine the head gasket was toast? Did he physically remove the head and see the carnage or did he do a compression test?

Did you replace the water pump? The impellar might have broken off. It's a very common problem which causes overheating.
I have also seem people have overheating problems because the coolant flange on the back of the head starts to leak...

well as far as I understand he did some chemical test in the coolant tank. by dropping some sort of chemical into the tank he was able to determine that there was oil in it.
As for leaking there was oil all over my garage from at least two places. one is the oil pan, I cracked that the other I don't know but there are two pools of oil.

Oil in the coolant could also be the result of a bad oil cooler... Not to mention that if the head gasket were bad enough to allow oil into the coolant, I'm pretty sure you would be burning oil as well. I've also read that it's a bad idea to mix other chemicals with the G12 coolant... Such as water wetter looking like oil when it mixes with G12,

Re: OH NO!!!! Blown head gasket

well my bro told me that as i was going to the mechanics( he followed me) I was spewing WHITE smoke for a while then it stopped, he tried to convince me that it was probably because of cold start but I know better I mean come on cold start. anyways they are taking my engine apart and cleaning it out and all that good stuff so if it keeps over heating well i guess i'll do my best to get the mechanics to pay for the further repairs on the count that they would have charged me for something that probably wasn't even broken. I get it back tuesday so we will see.
    I'll keep you guys posted
