Getting tired of this (suspension problem)

Well it's been doing this since I installed the coilovers. Coming from the rear of the car (mainly drivers side, sometimes pass side) there is a small creaking almost crunching sound whenever weight is transferred to the back of the car around a turn or something.

A few days after I put the coilovers on, I realized I didn't use locknuts on the top hats so I removed all of them, inspected them, and put everything back in, tight as can be, no defects, cracks, or anything out of the ordinary that I could see.

I've seen some users have similar problems on here, anyone have any insight?

Did you buy them used? If yes, then they are used and abused.

Figured it'd have something to do with that. What is so used about them that would cause it to make these noises though?

Bushing noises or something with the valves maybe. My buddy told me hes replacing shocks on a newest Passat which has only 55k because it was making noises like yours. Stuff wears out...

That's weak. I know I should have saved for new, but I couldn't pass up a "deal". Oh well. I guess I'll be running blown coilovers for a while, because other than that irritating noise every once in a while, they're smooth as hell.

Your coils aren't blown. I know what blow coils are, and yours arent, or youd be posting about something other than creaking sounds.

Blown coils is an equivelant to a pogo stick.

Not sure what you mean, but I'm assuming that's on a quattro only, I'm FWD, my rear suspension comes up to a tower behind the seats.

Re: Getting tired of this (suspension problem)

its in the front that i was referring too and I think that is the same. The upper control arm assembly which you bolt the shock assembly has 4 holes. You only use 2 just make sure they are the right 2.

I did not. But I have never had any problems with suspension I tightened down while on stands in the past... I thought the only thing that could be bad for was the bushings?

Re: Getting tired of this (suspension problem)

you definately want to tighten down all of the bolts on the shocks again once the suspension is loaded, as well as the sway bars (most likely the front)
if you have a floor jack just jack up the suspension while it is on teh jack stands. you may find it suprising how much more everything tightens down and im fairly confident that the sound you are hearing is just metal shifting a little bit with the rear shocks

Re: Getting tired of this (suspension problem)

I did tighten the top nuts on the rear suspension when the car was on the ground, but not the others. This sound is ONLY coming from the rear though, the fronts have not been a problem.

the lower bolts on the rear shocks were the loosest of all of the ones i re-tightened when i changed my suspension, which is why im fairly confident that is what the sound is coming from. They were kind of a bitch to get to though the way i did it - my dad helped me out and both of us were reaching up under the car while tires were on and car was on the ground. I'm sure there is an easier way to go about doing it but as i said i would assume that is where your noise is coming from. goodluck

Re: Getting tired of this (suspension problem)

I guess I could roll the back up onto ramps and get to it from there? Would I have to loosen it to unload the suspension first and then tighten it? Or is simply tightening it up good enough?

Re: Getting tired of this (suspension problem)

just go through and recheck and retighten. no need to unload anything. ramps should do the trick for sure
