Educate me about nitrous

I don't really know exactly how nitrous works; I know how and what a purge does, bottle warmer, and all that fun stuff. But I ahve no idea about nitrous controllers, how it is "armed" and activated. Sorry if I sound like I watched Fast and Furious one too many times.
Do you hold the button down the entire time your "shooting"?

Theres a switch to "arm" the system. Then there's a switch to "spray" that's usually activated only at full throttle.
