    Re: check these pics out

Actually you got it backwards. You've done a great job with the HDR, since the skies don't have those darn halos that people always seem to get with HDR. Problem is that the cars are underexposed. According to the Exif you shot these on Manual metering mode at F/5.6 @ 2.5 seconds. I'm guessing you used a tripod? At that shutter speed you will need one! It is still 1/3-1/2 stop underexposed. Did you meter the car? Because it looks like you may have metered something else. I suggest using an external flash, 550EX or better, with the flash head pointed directly upwards with the diffuser or a business card used to bounce off the light. Pump up the ISO to 800 or so. Or...shoot with more ambient light.

The pics are nice but HDR isn't necessary. It just makes the pics look more 'amateurish'.

Strawberry Lemonade @ Red Robin, FTW!!

Surprised you didn't have 15 year old kids hovering around your cars when you took the pic. That place during the summer is the absolute pits. It's a nice place to shop and waste a few hours on a Sunday shopping at Pier One (what would I know about that, huh?), but teenagers annoy me to the point where I can't even go to that movie theater anymore. Blah. /end rant.

In any case, hit me up sometime. Getting the new suspension and 19's hopefully next week.

The HDR looks really good IMO but the regular pics do show that they're a bit underexposed.

    Re: check these pics out

HDR, I don't think it was meant to make cars look flattering. With cars you want softer lighting and less minor details to be pronounced to make them look flawless and shiny. HDR, does the opposite by bringing out more detail. I think like portraits of people, say closeups, cars benefit from the softer look. HDR can tend to make people look older and exacerbate flaws and wrinkles. The same for cars.

    Soft look:

HDR is great for architecture and landscapes:

well i really like the look of HDR photos, it brings a very surreal almost fake look to them and thats what i'm going for. I'm not using it as a crutch for my regular photos, to me hdr and unedited photos are two different things i'm trying to learn. i'm not using hdr to slightly enhance a pic, its a whole different art form to me.

I agree, it is used to achieve a different look. HDR is suppose to try to bring out the look closer to what your eyes actually sees. However, and I am guilty of this as well, is that most people tend to over tonemap the images producing this "surreal" look. Almost cartoony. But by definition it is a tool, High Dynamic Range Imaging. Currently, our digital cameras, do not have a high enough dynamic range in tones and color to reproduce what our eyes see. Hence the advent of the usage of three identical pictures with 3 different exposure settings. One overexpose, another under and a "perfectly" exposed pic. Now if you are "imitating" HDR using only one exposure, many purists will disagree that it is HDR at all.

BTW, even when the "pros" shoot, many of their pics are not straight camera, many use the benefit of image processing. If you shoot RAW, then non of your pictures are really straight camera anyway, there has to be some processing done to get it to be usable.

Another footnote and to reiterate, unless you are trying to get a look of distress or age, HDR is not really suitable for car pictures, for reasons I have explained. It may look different and maybe even cool, but in reality it does not flatter the car and when the novelty of the HDR process dies, in the end it does not make for a good car photograph. My opinion, of course...to each is their own.
