    Urgent Tiptronic transmittion problem

My car is a 2001 1.8T Tip. A few days ago, I suddenly found out that the gear selection on the info display stayed at "D" whichever gear I selected. I switch to the tiptronic mode and nothing happened (cannot use the tiptronic mode). I went onto freeway and found out that the gear shifted up to 4 and didn't shift up to 5. Does that indicate another serious problem? Thank you.

Im no trans expert, but it could be a failed multiswitch located on the side of the trans or the TCU.

could be the magnets in the shifter assembly also. they are the ones that tell it which gear you are in for the display and the tiptronic. thats what i'll put my money on.

Multi switch is under $100 and could be replaced by a decent Euro import shop or....you. I would get codes and troubleshoot further first tho....

Wow, I didnt know that. I thought the multi switch was the gear selector source and the magnets on the console shifter were only used in tip mode.

I think I would better have my mechanics fixed it rather than fixing it myself. I don't have much knowledge about cars. sigh.

I didnt know either until a magnet fell and my car did the same thing as his car is doing. I ended up tearing it apart and then it worked.

If your not confortable then yeah take it to a mechanic. I wouldnt expect to pay anything more than like 200 dollars at most. if its the multi switch i'd give him like half hour labor plus parts, the magnets im unsure if they sell them seperately so you might have to get used and even then half hour or so for labor.

Thanks, Z. Does this look familiar? Glue and interior work sounds less expen$ive and easier than under the car trans stuff to me.

Thanks. But it's not the tip problem. It's the problem of gear selection.
