Has never left a mark when I've used the 3M foam tape. I even had something taped to the painted interior trip on my B5 for 5 years and it removed without leaving a mark.

Its pretty standard in the Auto industry, they use it for the badges from the factory.

^^^ Thats more for home use... 3M does make an automotive OEM double sided tape line of products, however im sure the home stuff you have will work, might not be as strong however (or hold up to water very well). But no, it will not damage your paint.

Just because it holds 10 lbs, doesn't mean it will work...if it is exposed to the force of air..like when you are driving down the road...you can just waive bye bye to your part.

use a stronger adhesive than when you want to remove it, use a heat gun and some type of adhesive remover.

Head to Napa, they have the 3M automotive version which is designed to be used in inclement weather. It's about $10 a roll IIRC

3M VHB is the heavy duty stuff - heat/water resistant, etc. Not that I have these, but they use it for sticking battery powered LEDs on wheels.

For RC cars, we use servo tape which is a thinner double sided tape that has a lot more tack strength. But Moulding tape should work for what you need.
