Low oil pressure light(the big red one!)

I've searched but I still have some questions about this.

So I did the timing belt, waterpump, thermostat, etc last week and yesterday I installed the 034 snub with bracket fyi if it really matters.

So today after going wot i feel a loss of power. I'm thinking no big deal, maybe a ic hose popped off or something of that nature. Well 2 hours later after stopping at my gf's house,Im driving home and the low oil pressure light pops up and the rev side of the cluster shows needle at redline.
I stop and check the oil and its fine but drove to a close autostore and bought some extra oil to add. I drive home and turn off the car after a cool down, keep in mind I already added half a quart of oil. Turn the car back on and the light pops back on.
3 hours pass and I go outside and turn the car on, The light does not come on(the added oil had to settle down finally).

There is no visual evidence that Im loosing oil but I just cant understand having low oil if I changed it about 2k miles ago(castrol 5w 30)
Im hoping this is nothing and the S just needed some extra oil. I haven't looked into the limp mode but surely that doesn't have to do with the oil pressure?

I believe to have seen some similar threads, try swapping out your oil pressure sensor. I think that sensor is located on the bottom of the oil pan.

OK just to clarify things it is the oil pressure light that was flashing. The light does not come on anymore after starting the car but once temps are up im sure it will pop up again. I will look into replacing the sensor but is there a way to know if I did any damage to the engine while driving home?

Re: Low oil pressure light(the big red one!)

Well ill give u an exampe of what happened to me... the Light would come ON and OFF at high speeds i was out of town doing 100 cruise.. so it'd come on beep beep.. off.. 5min later same shit.. over and over.. sometimes going away at least 15-20min.. call audi the next day.. they say tow it cus that light is seriiious shit.. dont run ur car with that light it means ur motor is not getting lubrication.. basically they had the car for 3 weeks..they changed all these parts hoses and oil pann and pump and all that shit.. and they told me if it were to come again they'd have to change the whole engine... now it runs like a dream.. smooth n shit..i think it was just accumilated sludge from past owner doing oil changes at 10000km or whatever. hope that helps.. but its something serious...park it

i got the beep, but no red oil light, the yellow light on the cluster came on LCD, beep, went away etc, which looked like an oil can, the audi manual says check oil sensor.

Re: Low oil pressure light(the big red one!)

are you sure its off? cause mine was diong the same thing.. check the 1 wire.. its pretty fragile or you forgot to plug it in under the intake manifold (like i did)

make sure when you start the car to rev it to 3k.. if it comes on again its the exact same symptoms as mine was.. i just checked from the sensor (right behind the oil filter) and trace the wire all the way up to the intake manifold the plug is right behind your throttle body on the drivers side.

hopefully you just forgot to plug it back in.. or pinched the wire while doing your maintnance

    big red one..

the yellow one has to do with the sensor in the bottom of the tank.. im talking about the pressure sensor.

Re: Low oil pressure light(the big red one!)

Well i went out today and turned the car on,revved it to 3k and nothing. Let it idle for a while and nothing. There is a slight difference in the way the engine sounds though. How do I troubleshoot if there is no light to go off of? The light on yesterday but wont come back on?

Re: Low oil pressure light(the big red one!)

its most likely just a sensor. I had this same problem and it turned out the wire from the oil pressure sensor up to the harness somehow cracked in half. I would look at the sensor wire and the sensor before stressing outto bad about it...

Re: Low oil pressure light(the big red one!)

replace the sensor with a known good one (new or used) and trace the wire back to the harness to make sure its got a good connection.

its not hard to do. and if you have a friend with an s4 it should only take a half an hour at most.

pull off turbo pressure hose on drivers side(2 clamps and 2 allens near the oil pan) pull that hose off and you have access to the sensor and the wire.

that will eliminate most of the possibilities with the electrical part of the situation

Thanks you for replies. I will check the pressure sensor and the wiring. Hopefully thats the culprit. That light is no joke.
