    custom exhaust setups

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I thought i had a thread like this but idk where it went. Anyway,
I'm looking at getting custom exhaust. I'm not BT and don't plan on going that far. Only real mod would probably be GIAC. Want to keep cat. No Test Pipe.
Was wondering what you guys suggest &/or what you guys have on your cars.

My car: 99.5 1.8T FWD Tip (i know...its the boring combo)
    Size: 2.5" cat back
    Muffler: Thinking Borla or Magnaflow
    Tips: Whatever looks good

I'm open to suggestions. Should I have a resonator or just straight to muffler?
Which muffler? Don't want anything CRAZY loud that will resonate at low RPMs and make me deaf. Obviously nothing ricey...
    Please & Thank you all...

    Re: custom exhaust setups

I "experimented" with custom exhaust on my last car. I regretted it to say the least. I had ambitions of getting GTRS eliminator kit so I went w/ 2.75". In I used flowmaster middle muffler and magnaflow 14862 rear muffler. If I recall, it was 2.25" inlet (shop enlarged the opening to just over 2.5") and DUAL 3" round tips. I think it looked really good (filled up the exhaust cutout well --> looked just like my current borla tips) but it was really loud and had a lot of drone on the highway. In the end I spent a lot more than I wanted, and could have gotten a proven system. Good luck!

    X2
    My EXACT words.

But for custom, If you REALLY dont plan on going BT, get 2.25" catback with a magnaflow 14815, and a resonator.
But I honestly dont see why you want to get an exhaust, if you just want it for sound, then just pick up a new muffler.

If you get custom exhaust done right, its just as good as an expensive pre made setup.

I paid 270 or so for a full 3" turbo back. I wouldn't say so.

    Re: custom exhaust setups

One might be a bit loud honestly... I am not trying to say, "BUY BOTH OF MINE!" because I know I can find someone for the other muffler... With increased pipe diameter and straight through design, it will be loud... Just look at the Borla system... PERFECT sound level and tone, has two mufflers... These two are the equivilent of what Borla uses... However, if you do want only one... I can do ya for $65 shipped... As I stated, $110 shipped for both would put them at $55 each... Which if you take both, you can put one on now and if it IS too loud for you, you can put the other on...

Almost any aftermarket system will have two mufflers... Just put one on the very rear of the car and the other about mid - 3/4's of the way back... Let me know what you want to do!

    How does this deal sound?
$620 for 2.5" stainless catback to magnaflow (w/ two mufflers)
    or
    $520 for same but aluminum
I'm thinking stainless since its only 100 bucks more...might as well

I have a custom 2.5" Magnaflow and love it. Test Pipe, 2 resonators then a Magnaflow 14815 at the end. No drone, and has the nicest rumble, I couldn't ask for a nicer setup

    Still high to me.
I spent $400 installed for a custom mandrel bent 3" exhaust including muffler, tip, labor, etc.

Better than paying APRs inflated prices though.

It's not mandrel bent and doesn't include a resonator. Not that it's a bad choice though.

    Re: custom exhaust setups

Have them put a long cherrybomb in there as well (you have the driveshaft area, so you have loads of room...), One muffler @ 2.5" will be a bit loud.. Especially for an automatic. Keeping another resonating style muffler in there will quiet it down durring low rpm driving, but allow you to be loud under load.

Or have them experiment with that option before they weld it up....

I have wondered about a cherry bomb... I have a 3" TB SS with a Borla and 2 x 3" tips... and it's nice at normal speeds.. a little droney.. but, this past week end I drove for about 3 hours solid @ 80mph and its LOUD.

I was going to try the cherrybomb, but I decided to replace my cutout with the Borla muffler I had replaced with the cutout. Its really quiet now, I dont even notice any real exhaust sound when cruising. Under load it sounds good, but my intake sound is a little bit louder, and my DV is even louder (sounds sick.. Almost like a BOV)

Ohh, I also do not have a CAT, so maybe that is part of my drone problemo. Labree HFC, soon!

I should add, that outside of a high speed highway drone (I think it's between 3k & 4k rpm), I f'ing LOVE my exhaust. Knocks you over when you start the car, gurbles nicely at idle and when I open it up, wow, yum!!

    Re: custom exhaust setups

The volume (measure of space) of the exhaust system dictates volume (dB, sound level) and just as important, the note it is tuned to. Just like a musical instrument the tone gets lower as it gets larger. Soprano, alto, tenor, bass. Going to larger sized mufflers or ones that are tuned differently will change the resonance (drone, modal zone).

In high school a friend had a Jeep with a cheap bandpass enclosure. Two notes were way louder than everything else because it had no real tuning. Your exhaust (and mine) are the same way. A larger or smaller resonator will move that frequency up or down and away from the car's natural resonance. When tuning a subwoofer system you have to pull down the note(s) that line up with the car's resonant frequency and create modal zones (peaks on peaks). Also have to bump up the nodal zones (valleys in valleys) and you end up with a very pleasant flat-ish curve. Killing drone is all about squashing peaks.

The stock intake manifolds on some cars (like my wife's Outback) have sound chambers that cancel resonant frequencies. On the Subey 2.5 it is a tube the size of my forearm that goes nowhere. The fancy flapper valve mufflers use the same principle.
