    Can residuals be negotiated?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys,

My lease is coming up soon on my B7 A4 S-line, and I'd really like to purchase it outright. My residual will be $21,159. Is there any chance that I can negotiate this down, or am I locked in to this rate?

My gut tells me that they really don't want another car sitting on their lot, and they will probably want to send me home with the car. What's the best strategy here?

    Re: Can residuals be negotiated?

To answer your specific question directly, no, residual values are not negotiable.

Now to answer the general question, yes, you can negotiate a lower "buy out" of the car with the dealership when you go to turn it in. Be mindful of the value of other cars like yours in the same condition and the current market. Since The B8 A4s are coming out you'll have better than average luck getting them to shave on the price some. Don't expect wonders though.

My buddy just finished his lease on a 2004 1.8T and was able to get them to take an extra $1,000 off his stated residual to purchase the car because it had been in an accident and then repaired. It was a good deal for my friend.

At the end of the day, it never hurts to ask. Just be willing to walk away.

    Re: Can residuals be negotiated?

Are you financed with AOA or a bank?

You can also ask for financing deals if they will not move on the buy-out price (or go for both). You may be able to get a 0% loan for a buyout at the stated residual. Ask for a gas gift card or complimentary warranty coverage.

Residuals are very chaotic currently so as the poster above said, ask for anything.

    Re: Can residuals be negotiated?

I generally know how leases work but I would use the general rule of thumb of:

Price if bought new at the time - total lease payments made = offering of car... if their offer is below this... it's a good price... does this work lease people?
