Polishing out scratches in Ultrasport rims

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have some swirlmarks and scratches in my rims that look like they are from the PO using too stiff of a scrub brush on them. I have some time off and was thinking about trying to get them out. Can you use polish and follow with wax like you would on your paint, or is there a better way?

I didn't know if there was something different about the paint or clear because they are on the rims.

I'd rather not get them refinished because the paint never seems to be as bright, or hold up as well as the factory.

Are these for painted rims, or just bare metal? Ultrasport rims are painted silver. Perhaps w/ a clearcoat, but not sure.

Did you already check the detailing forums?
    I think they are clearcoated.

pretty crazy timing. this weekend i took off all four wheels and resprayed them, of course with detailed prep work before hand. but they turned out as good as new. the p.o. loved to park on curbs i guess.

Re: Polishing out scratches in Ultrasport rims

Hey man, those came out REALLY sharp! What paint/clear did you use? I found that in the past simply using Duplicolor Bright Silver worked well, but have yet to settle on a clear that doesn't yellow, and holds up well.

I used Griot's clear in the past, and it sucked. Then went to something basic last time. Is a lacquer or acrylic the best to use?

This was all on prior cars though. I feel like Audi RS4-style rims have more of a "shiny grey-ish silver" color from the factory, rather than the standard bright melallic silver, and have yet to find a paint that matches that.

i used duplicolor T191 truck van and car paint. it is basically a perfect match.
you can do one wheel and not tell the difference in shade.

i didnt use a clear, cuz like you said, i didnt want the blotching effect.

im thinkng about doing the two tone like the MTM wheel, but im not
sure how to go about the seam that taping off the lip and side of the spokes makes.

    ANOTHER TIP

For those of you who followed the A4mods curbed rim repair DIY.
A much easier way to go about fixing the rash is, instead of using bondo
to cover up all the blemishes, using a dremel with a sanding bit to sand
away the rough curb rash works much easier. then use sand paper to get
the smooth detail after the dremel. much faster and easier than bondo.

You will need to use bondo or something to fill the scratches if your curb marks are deep. If you want the wheels to match the color thay are new, use Wurth silver paint. It is a match for Brilliant Silver Metallic.

that paint probably works good. but just my experience, i taped off
only a little bit of the lip the first time, sprayed it, took the tape off
and there was no color difference between stock and t191.
so both work fine i guess.
