Rear breaks dusting WAY more than fronts...

I have an '05 1.8T, and have noticed that there is WAY more dusting on the back brakes. Any ideas why? Doesn't seem to be an issue of binding. Really confusing...

Re: Rear breaks dusting WAY more than fronts...

You have got to be kidding. Wow. I've never driven a car that dusted more in the back, on account of the fronts providing more of the stopping power, having bigger pads, and doing more of the work. Is there something about the design here that just produces more dust back there?

I'm very surprised to hear this is the case. Can anyone expand on it?

As said thats normal, front pads are a semi ceramic compound which dusts less.

Re: Rear breaks dusting WAY more than fronts...

Ah! That would explain it! I had no idea that the rears are a different pad compound. My car is still under warranty, so it's using factory gear. Can't wait to go 3.0 and throw some Mintex Reds in there... Just a few more months...

Re: Rear breaks dusting WAY more than fronts...

My rear brakes emit a lot more brake dust than my fronts also. I end up having to wipe down my rear wheels much more frequently than my fronts.

P.S. Yeah, what's with all this poor Internet spelling?

OMG. I'm retarded. I'm usually such a spelling snob too. Give me a pass on this one? I just took the WA Bar Exam and my brain is mush.

The mintex reds to me dusted just as bad. I want a OEM quiet pad with much less dust. Does this exist?

Re: Rear breaks dusting WAY more than fronts...

The rears on our cars do more work than on most cars. It is part of the design to reduce front dive when braking. By turning up the bias to the rears a bit, it makes the rear 'squat' and that in turn reduces the amount the front dives. This is what the audi mechanics told me when I questioned them about the dust on my rears...makes sense.

Re: Rear breaks dusting WAY more than fronts...

I asked the same question months ago. I changed the rear pads out for the upgraded semi-ceramic from O'Reily's. No more dust!

Matter of fact, I was just going to post a thread related to this topic. Guess it is normal then & i'll just have to buy aftermarket pads. Also, what quattroman said makes sense as well.

Re: Rear breaks dusting WAY more than fronts...

sorry for the thread jack but....

do your rears go faster than your fronts. changed all 4 sets of pads at the same time but then the rears went out and had to replace them, when the front was still pretty good.
