What makes you think there may be a first gear problem?

The problem occurs only in first gear. They drained the oil tranny and there is a lot of metal in it. That means the tranny is contaminated and all bearings would need to be changed to do a "proper" job and that can be very expensive.

We are looking at several used trannies at this time which would be cheaper than a complete rebuilt.
