1.8T with red on the right

Hello guys,
I've B5 1999 1.8T and it has a red line on the right of the 'T' like this one:
Not every B5 from this year has it. I'm wondering what it means ? Any ideas ?

I think it is for the sports edition. Don't quote me on that though.

It means you hve the 170hp version

If you bought it used it could mean the person that owned it before bought that T and put it on the car.

Yeah I agree with Mike, because IIRC that k03s only comes on the 2000+ audis.

No, it doesn't mean it has sport.... They just changed it in ~2000... I did some research one this...

The red flag is supposed to go on cars with the AJL motor.... Which is 180hp... AJL didn't come to America at all... So I guess that they put it on the 2001's with AWM's...

It means you have 170hp motor

Yep in Europe we got AJL engines but this is not what the Red T means, It means the car is fitted with the K03's turbo which in the US was tuned to 170bhp due to your smog extras. In Europe on the other hand we were tuned to 180bhp and the Red T only appeared on the 1.8TQ as this was the only model that got the K03's and it was the model 1.8T that was ever made with Quattro available in the UK on the B5.

You guys were lucky you got Quattro years before us in the 1.8T engine.

Has I understand only face lift A4's got the K03's turbo the only thing I do not know about in the US if the turbo was only fitted to the Quattro.

I saw a 1999 A4 with that at a dealer like two months ago. In fact the car had a AZ decal on the side too. I know that usually 170's in the US got that, but I at this point have seen at least 4 99.5's with it.

the only B5 A4's that have a 170hp engine (which means they have the red T badge) are 2001's

every other year has a 150hp 1.8t engine

The only difference between the K03 in the 2000 and the one in the 2001 was the shaft, 3mm for 2000 and 4mm in 2001. The difference in power was because 2001 came with more boost stock, .6 bar vs .8 bar.

my car originally came with no red flag, i debadged the car shortly after i got it.
when my car was repainted after being completely keyed the dealership put the badges back on, and the T they put on does have the red flag. just a bit of interesting side story.

i was under the impression it signified the sport edition, i could be wrong.

I've seen non-sport 2001 cars with the red-badged T. My sport-edition has it too. Its all about the 20 ponies.

mike-2ptzero has it right guys. Unless you have a 2001 a4, the previous owner of your car replaced the standard badge with the updated 2001 badge. Only the 2001s came with the 170 hp motor (in the US at least) and only the 2001s had the red flag (sport or non-sport makes no difference)

This is correct. Only 2001's came with the red flag T, any others just replaced it.

My trunk is completly debadged since I got a euro trunk, no red flag on mine for a while now.
