With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
About a month ago I purchased my first car, a CPO 2005 S4 Avant (Tip).

Honestly, I don't know how to explain things, I'm at a loss for words. I know that I have nothing to compare it to, but damn is this thing intoxicating. The sound, the power, the looks, everything! I know I made the right choice. I also do know that I have a lot to learn too.

I originally was aiming towards a 05 GLI, and never would've thought possible of obtaining such a beast as my first means of transportation. But with a little sacrifice, decent numbers throughout dealer and insurance company (really sealed the deal), I felt comfortable going for it.

Well, I'm enjoying every single second with it. Gas prices aren't even bothering me since I only use the car on the weekends. My family and friends outside the automotive community thought I was crazy going for a V8. But all I get now is nothing but compliments. If you must know why I opted for Tip its because the wife plans on driving it as well (when I let her ), the only small sacrifice I had to make. But I told her that my second car, a RS4, will be off limits and strictly manual.

Now for my first question among many to come:

While in Sports mode, when I let go of the accelerator, the cars feels like it's being constraint by something, almost like its dragging. Like if the brakes are being gently applied to keep the car in check without my foot on the brakes. I don't get that feeling while on Drive mode, when I let go of the accelerator the car just cruises unrestricted till I apply brakes. Do I need to have this checked?

    Thank you in advance.
    Chris

I think if you put it in Sports mode - it is like putting your car in a manual shift mode.

congrats on the purchase. I recently made the plunge too of the same exact car and I couldn't be happier. My first awd and V8. Smiles for miles.

as for sport mode, the only thing I notice is that my gas pedal pushes back when I hit WOT...as if to say 'are you sure' and I usually answer yes. If this is what you experience, then it is normals, as I have checked. If your car is actually feeling slower, you made need to get that checked out...thank god for CPO. Hopefully it is the first. Keep us posted.

well s mode just puts it into a lower gear... the slowing down feeling happens when the gear is at higher rpm.. it automatically slows itself down when u release the gas... its just like being in a low gear in a manual car.

That's engine braking from being in a lower numerical gear. Sports mode has a more aggressive shift pattern to try to keep you in the powerband higher/more. What you feel is the effect of going closed throttle at higher rpms.

In drive mode, when you let off the throttle, you're lower in that gear so you don't feel it nearly as much.

Its like downshifting a manual for decelleration.

Engine braking. It will save your brakes! I use manual mode almost all the time and drop from 3rd to 2nd as I come to a traffic light. The engine will blip to 5k and steadily slow the car nicely without having to get heavy on the brakes.

ok, since you already got your "s" button issue worked out lets move on.

I have one question. how old r u? This is your first car and you already have a wife? either your girlfriends father had a shotgun or you're a pretty mature guy. whatever the case is, welcome to the zine and congrats on the car. you made a good call.

Oh no, keeping it near speed limits has become a task though. One second you are cruising the next you are breaking the law. The responsible side of me must prevail, last thing I need is for my insurance to go up. But there's a shit load of people that need to be hit in the head with something and have their license + car taken away.

I purchased it at Town Motors in Englewood, NJ. Unfortunately, I read to horror stories a bit too late. The service there is stale at best. I’m still waiting for my call so that I can have the cluster display cleaned. There are coffee stains inside the display that are irritating me from previous owner. So far I’ve spoken to dealer, service, another sales person that I bumped into at Waterfest who put me in contact with his manager. To be told they will take care of it by switching the glass/cover with another car. Still waiting. I just want the shit cleaned, not a new cluster display. Was also given the documentation for a completely different S4, I really wanted the service manual for the car, but apparently they don’t have it.

On the bright side though, I had condensation build up on the headlights, was told to bring it in by the dealer, and it was immediately taken care of. I was told it is a normal as long as I don’t have buckets of water accumulating. I was even given a Audi service memo with regards to it being normal.

Last week when I took the car for a wash, it was pointed out to me that my rear windshield wiper is broken/cracked at the base of the arm. Still works though. But will need to have that taken care of. I have pictures of when I first picked up the car, so I know it wasn’t me or after purchase of car. Also, the right side mirror housing has a small nasty crack. Something my dumb ass should’ve inspected, lesson learned. I was just so giddy to be in a S4. So we will see how they handle that.

    LMFAO! Thanks for the welcome.

I’m older than what you might be thinking. I just turned 30, I been with my girlfriend for 9 years, we also have a 8 year old daughter too. So technically we are married. We were suppose to get married this year but she decided to push it forward till next year in order to purchase the car.

Why so long to purchase a car you might ask, well I never really had the need for a car until now. I work in the city, no way in hell I would drive in with traffic and the conditions of the street here. I’m also the sole provider at home too. I take care of the bills so that she can concentrate on finishing school and taking care of the little one. She has one year to go. Most importantly I did not want to shoot myself on the foot and stretch my finances too thin.

Sorry but is there really a 'S' button for the car? How come I don't find it in my S4! Also where is the Sports Mode? I guess I need to drive the car on the weekdays, too but not just the weekend!

I was fortunate enough to get the last spot available in the building where I reside. It comes at a premium, but totally worth it. Still worry about the folks parked next to me though, so far so good.

    Thanks!

Awesome! We're glad to have you aboard.

As for the condensation, I had it also and it became progressively worse. I took it to the dealer 4 times and each time I couldn't get it fixed. They even tossed me a copy of the TSB stating that it was normal. However, if you look closely, the TSB isn't for our years. It's for the B5 years. After I saw that I had been duped I got pissed, so after the rain storm I took it back to the dealer and told them that I got pulled over by the Highway Patrol and they only gave me a warning. It was fixed within the hour.

If you have trouble, I would just get a sop to write-up a fix it ticket for the headlights and then Audi won't have a leg to stand on. It is a safety issue and it will get worse with time. Your best bet is to wash the car and hit the hell out of the headlight to get it really soaking, then head to the dealer.
