Exclamation Heard a pop while in 3rd gear (not redlining) and the car died.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I was driving down the street, went into third gear and at around ~4000 RPM I heard a loud pop and the car died. I can start the car again, but shortly after, it dies again if I start to rev it; I also hear a rattling sound. Anyone ever experience this before?

If this helps, I recently went APR Stage 1+ (on Thursday with TT225) and was getting the bank1 mult system too lean CEL.

edit: I ended up pushing it home and it's sitting in my driveway right now.

Unplugg your MAF and see if it starts.

Sounds like you blew a charge hose off.

If it runs with the MAF unplugged then you know that a hose blew off

that sounds bad. Go to an auto parts store and pick up a compression tester (they're about 35 bucks).

Remove all 4 spark plugs, and unplug all 4 fuel injectors. One by one, check compression on each cylinder.

Re: Heard a pop while in 3rd gear (not redlining) and the car died.

My guess would piping coming off, he recently upgraded to APR 1+ which is gonna increase his boost, therefore possibly causing a hose to come loose.

Unplugg the MAF, if she runs, then you gotta start pressure testing the car.

Bank 1 lean is often a CEL from pipes coming loose. He could also have a bad 02 I believe, but I doubt that is the case.

Compression testing his car shouldn't be nec. unless he somehow had a leaky gasket, which would cause oil to be burned. Or he could have fubar'd the motor and have poor compression. But neither one of those will cause a popping sound and stall your car. Your car will just run like shit.

yay for IC hoses coming off!

or you blew up the end tank on your side mount - that could be the rattle as well.

Re: Heard a pop while in 3rd gear (not redlining) and the car died.

Thanks guys. I just got in a few minutes ago, and when I wake up, I'll try finding a walkthrough/DIY for unplugging the MAF (I found something similar for VW's at http://www.oneighturbo.com/2007/09/1...iv-volkswagen/ but I'm not sure how relative that is) and checking for loose hoses.

I was actually surprised by the amount of strangers that helped me push it about 1 km (up two hills) back to my house. Although having 3 women in short shorts/booty shorts/daisy dukes, halter tops, and high heels surely did help attract them.

Don't get too worked up, you just blew a hose off, I promise. Don't worry about your MAF or your compression. Just check all your hose clamps going from your turbo to IC and your IC to TB. There will be a loose one somewhere. Once your find that hose put it back on and your set!

I'm a complete noob when it comes to cars.
Do I need to jack it up or remove the bumper? Can I use the writeups from http://www.a4mods.com/index.php?page...ages/fmic.html or http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=40503 to figure out where to look?

you can just remove the belly pan in the front and look up between the radiator for several connections that could be the one that blew off... Intercooler elbow on driverside, turbo outlet on passenger side

Put the car on jackstands in the front. Take the belly pan off. And inspect the intercooler hoses.

Re: Heard a pop while in 3rd gear (not redlining) and the car died.

Thanks again guys, I just finished it. It took me over 2 hours but I took out my headlights, the bracket the holds it, and the intake thing, and found one of the big hoses that connects to the DV popped out (I'm guessing this was the turbo outlet?) I was able to wriggle the hard plastic nub back in all the way to the ridge into a bigger hose but there was no clamp on it (should there be one?) I drove around my block and revved the engine a fair bit and it didn't stall, but I'm worried it may come out again with the added boost I now have, but I guess we'll see if I try going out tonight.

All the connections on the DV should have one of those clamp dealies that you screw and it tightens. You dont need to worry. Its only stage 1+.
Just get a proper clamp and youll be fine.
