    help - strange suspension clunk

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Ok, so after changing my rack and pinion my car is still making a strange clunk noise from the drivers side front suspension. The thing is that it only makes it when driving slow over road imperfections. A technician had the car for a week and check "everything" and said that after tightening everything up it was fixed; but it is still making the noise. He also said that the upper strut mount bushing was perfect. Could it be that the shock is damaged? The car feels perfect when driving around, its only when driving like below 15mph...

I also changed all my control arms last year, and they still look perfect and have no play when I try to move them...

    Thanks guys!

I had a shim missing from my brakes when I testdrove my car at the dealer. I told them get rid of that clunk and i'll buy the car. haven't heard it since. Check your brakes.

This is true. Not the 3 bolts, but the top center one, that holds the spring onto the strut. It must be installed with an impact wrench. HTH

Re: help - strange suspension clunk

I have the same noise but from the rear, probably the diff. But im tired of guessing so i'm going to a parking lot, turn my wheel all the way in one direction and floor the gas with esp off. I'm sure something will break and that will take all the guess work out of it.....thats how annoyed I am!

yes, from my previous post I was refering to the actualy top strut nut.

if it is not tight all the way... like even barley loose... then everytime you hit a bump you will here it bottom out and it will clunk everytime.

im willing to bet that is the problem.

Even wtih an impact gun you have to sit there for a second until it stops turning..

ITS FROM YOUR BRAKE... THE SOUNDS COMING FROM THE BRAKE PAD HITTING THE CALIPER HOUSING. Jack up one side hit the tire at 12 oclock then hit it again while pressing down the brake pad. I'm pretty sure its brake pad...

Are you saying to have some press the brake peddle or to hold the pad with my hand while hitting the tire?
Also, what should i be looking for while hitting the tire?

I mean pressing the actual brake pads with your hands so that it doesn't vibrate or hit anything while your hitting the tire with your hands.

Re: help - strange suspension clunk

Yeah, the shim was missing between my caliper and pad and it was causing the caliper or pad to make a clunking sound over bumps and on turns. They replaced the shim/spacer and the clunking went away. Quite possibly the culprit.
