Running lean after Revo free trial chip (Update post #51)

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My car was running good till last week. After driving around for about 2 hrs with this free 5hrs trial Revo flash i got a CEL. So i went to my shop right the way. They Vag'd it, i got like 5 codes, basically car was running too lean. They cleared them, told me to wait till this flash is gone and come back if it comes back on. 30 min after it came back on. Now i'm like at 1k rpms at idle, car is really slow and etc. I got a friend with Vag today, cleared the codes again, when i turned the car on, it wash shaking all over.
Sorry, i forgot to get the codes, but i'm sure someone had it happened before.
Is my MAF sensor gone? Any suggestions plz?

Might be your MAF sensor or your intake. How old is your MAF and have you cleaned it?

94k miles old, no i havent cleaned it yet. Yeah, i got a cone filter with no heat shield, and its pretty hot outside.
The thing is the chip is gone by now, but i still have these problems.
    Any suggestions what to do?

Sounds like a coilpack failure to me. Were you getting any misfires??

Re: Running lean after Revo free trial chip

Oh yeah, a lot, car was shaking like a boat after i cleared the codes.
the thing is it doesnt misfire anymore, maybe once in a while. But when i put it neutral, rpms go crazy, they go down really slow, they might stop at 1k for like 15 seconds, then go down to 800, then go up to 1.1k.
i change my spark plugs a month ago, gap is 0.28 didnt have ANY problems. My 2 coilpacks went out almost a year ago, i changed them. I still have to stock ones in the engine and i got 2 spare coilpacks in a trunk. I know when coilpack go out you get a big misfire all the way in at any rpms range. its not happening to me now. Car is actaing weird at idle and slow when i try to accelerate.

With your idle jumping around it almost sounds like a boost/vaccum leak somewhere. Altough I've never experienced it, I've read alot of times a weird idle like you described was a leak on the intake manifold/TB gasket.

Sounds like the extra air the chip required made your MAF shit out. It's common for them to go out after being chipped. It was most likely on the verge of going out anyways.

Dont waste your money on changing it yet. Take ur MAF out and soak it with alcohol. The more pure the better. I used rubbing alcohol in b5. I think its like 93-97%. Let it dry then put it back in and see if it will solve the problem.

if that doesn't fix the problem, swap a buddy's maf out and put it in your car to see if it fixes the problem. If it doesn, then you know it's your maf.

Re: Running lean after Revo free trial chip

this actually just happened to me. not sure what the solution would be while keeping the REVO software, we just ended up swapping it out.

but according to the guy at REVO, the REVO software only works with the OEM MAF sensor and specific cc injectors, all of which i did not have.

my CEL was on, traction control light was on, and it was doing the slow idle down behavior that u described. my car would also shut off after turning it on when the engine had been sitting for 6+ hours.

Perhaps they flashed you with Big Injector software and you only have stock injectors? Check VAG-COM block 032 for long term fuel trims

If you've never touched the vacuum lines and you're closing in on 100k then I'm willing to bet you have a few vacuum lines that are brittle (from the high heat in the engine compartment) and will break when you touch them.

Not sure if this is related but after the 5 hour REVO trial, the ECU map is returned to the REVO standard Map (which is slighty down on power compared to stock) and not the standard Audi Map. Kinda sucks IMO...

Re: Running lean after Revo free trial chip

dude don't just soak your MAF in isopropyl alcohol, who knows if that stuff is too strong of a solution. just go to autozone and get the Mass Airflow Cleaner (spray can) for less than $5. MAF's are sensitive, I wouldn't just throw the thing in alcohol and hope your problem goes away. make sure you let it dry completely before re-installing and testing. definitely try cleaning it though, at 94K miles this could do a world of good.

also if you're stock, try gapping the spark plugs at .032"...i'm pretty sure .028" is for the Stage 1/1+ guys.

Re: Running lean after Revo free trial chip

This sounds like the exact same problem i got after i got my APR trial. irregular RPMs, running too lean, loss of power, and cylinder misfires.

Turns out i have some serious vacuum issues. Try pulling your oil filler cap off and see if you have vacuum there. If so, ive got some DIYs for the fix.

Some offtop, Why does Revo do it? Nobody told me i'm gonna have Revo's Map after the chip is gone.

Maybe that was spark plugs- but i was ok for 2 months with 0.28 and i dont think that's the problem.

Re: Running lean after Revo free trial chip

Im really not sure if it was because of the chip, probably a big coincidence, although maybe the increased power screwed up one of the PVC valves that was already starting to go.

The problem did occur about 1-2 hours of driving after the chip expired though.

Re: Running lean after Revo free trial chip

i got these two main ones:

17519 - Oxygen (Lambda) Sensor Regulation: Bank 1: System too Lean
    P1111 - 002 - Lower Limit Exceeded

16891 - Idle Control System RPM Higher than Expected.
    P0507 - 001 - Upper Limit Exceeded - Intermittent

and then some with cylinder misfires although they were far less frequent

edit: forgot to add that my RPMs drop really slowly to about 1000 aswell. They sometimes sit up at 2000 for a while and finally drop to 1000 and start rising again

Try going back to the REVO dealership and asking them to put your stock map back, they may have taken a backup of these files. Over here in the UK I have a friend who works in the mapping trade and he believes they place the REVO standard files back, to make your car seem even slower than Audi standard, thus making you go back to the shop and buy the full blown REVO map.
Sounds dodgy to me, and he also says that other mapping suppliers and even Audi themselves struggle to access a cars ECU running a standard REVO map.

I fixed my problem by swithing out the PCV valve in the DIY.

It was a pain in the ass though, the whole intake manifold had to go before i could even get my hands in there

Try pulling your oil filler cap while the engine is running. If theres so much suction that you can barley pull it off, im willing to bet you have the same problem as me

Just checked that. I never tried that before so i dont know so it is suppose to be, but it wasnt hard at all to open it.

I just took my MAF off, put it back in with Forge 007 instead of Forge 004. Car seems to be fine now at idle (no shakes) but rpms go down really slow.
