    Third Gear Woes

This winter I got a few things done to my car while away at college: timing belt etc, Rs4 clutch, LWFW, JHM shifter, DTS, Engine Mounts (blown) & snub. Before i left my biggest shifter problem was 1->2 being a little rough sometimes you just has to be a little soft with it. 2->3 was fine.

Now driving the car feels very different, it feels like it revs faster and is easier to match revs when shifting. I dont feel as much driveline movement through the shifter and 1->2 is never an issue. Love the JHM short throw.

BUT now my problem, ever since i got back in the car i cant shift 2->3 higher then 4k rpms without grinding. If i go any higher than that and dont wanna grind i have to wait FOREVER so long that the car drops to idle. Its such a pain in the ass not being able to get on the throttle hard in second, then shift to third. Is this a transmission issue like the synchros, or something else like a miss-alligned shifter. I hope its something i can fix easily, would you reccomend changing my transmission fluid too?

    Re: Third Gear Woes

Did you do a full break in period of 500 miles for the clutch and flywheel before you started doing shifts above 4500 rpm? That break in period is needed for the clutch to settle itself onto the flywheel and pedal motion. Sometimes the clutch will stick during break in.

Otherwise, i'm thinking that with the JHM shifter, it just made a miss-alignment more prevalent. This is just my .02 but take from it what you want.

    Re: Third Gear Woes

Iv put about 3000 miles on the car since i got it back. Someone at Status Auto in Londenderry NH told me there was no breakin needed on the clutch. I was skeptical so for about the first 600-700 miles i didnt run through the gears or shift agressively.

Anyone else have any advice? I wish this would go the hell away. I guess if/when i get the GT's i want maybe ill get a Stasis close ratio 6speed.... more money into the car.

    Re: Third Gear Woes

its supereasy to adjust your shifter. it could be that the bolts came loose and the shifter is misaligned. all u need is a 10 mm socket, long extension, and a 6 mm alan-socket. check it man.

    Re: Third Gear Woes

my third gear syncro has started to fail too.

f@$@#$@#$ing thing just had an expensive rebuild less than 10,000 miles ago.

shifter issues plague 1st gear and getting into reverse more. misaligned shifter generally doesnt do anything to 3rd

    Re: Third Gear Woes

i thought the new syncros were supposed to hold up better than this.

my tranny has not been abused. The old original third gear synco had NO issues in 100,000 miles and had a full summer of weekly racing on it before the 1st gear shift collar locked up.

new syncro? pisses itself after 12 passes and one summer of weekly speed limit cruises to the local PARKING LOT.

    Re: Third Gear Woes

I just dont understand why every shift except 2->3 is fine. I used to have little issues with 1-2 and reverse but now thats ALL gone, 1-2 and into reverse couldnt be better but fucking 3rd gear is just a slut.

So the only REAL solution is a rebuild with new synchros? Like i said if thats the case ill deal with it down the road sometime and just get a Stasis Close ratio 6speed!

    Re: Third Gear Woes

Ya but i dont want a stock transmission if i get new turbos, id rather spend the money to get something that might show a little performance gain, and hopefully be a little more resilient under the stress of a tuned motor

    Re: Third Gear Woes

Change your tranny fluid with some Redline MT90. It's a synchro problem. A misaligned shifter will affect mostly 1st and reverse, or else 5th and 6th.

Are you correctly rev-matching your shifts? If not, that'll wear out your synchros faster than anything else.
