Question Castrol syntec 0w30 vs 5w40

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am not going to ask which is 'better'. My question is to anyone who has used both, have you noticed which of the two burned less oil in between changes?

I am due for an oil change with in the next few weeks. I am almost finished with an auto rx clean cycle and i've been using mobil 1 0w40. I am going to try syntec next for the rinse and was wondering out of the 2 approved grades, if one was better in terms of the engine burning less oil.

5w40 is audi recommended, I just put in Shell Rotella 5w40 synthetic, so far love it. It was only 4 bucks a quart cant beat that.

In the owners manual, it says it was filled with 0w-30 from factory. German Castrol 0w-30 is the good stuff.

Where are you guys finding the german castrol (labeled "European blend")? Used to be found at Auto Zone, went there over the weekend and they no longer carry it.

That's odd...I get mine at Autozone. There was a period where they stopped carrying it last year but brought it back a earlier this year. I hear Pepboys carries it now as well.

Re: Castrol syntec 0w30 vs 5w40

I use both and really can't see a difference. I stopped using 0W30 because my Autozones stopped stocking it. This happened in a lot of areas because the demand was low. I frequent Autozone so they tell me these kinds of things

I was just wondering out of the 2 if anyone has noticed their engine burns less oil in between changes with either of the two.

I think for your engine, the v6 3.0, it is not as crucial, but I'd be looking to change my oil pretty soon, like tomorrow with 7K. Turbo (AMB) engines, are known to the government and many mechanics as the one vunerable to sludge. Also with a turbocharged engine, frequent oil changes are crucial.

Re: Castrol syntec 0w30 vs 5w40

ive been using 5w-40 castrol syntec and do it every 4-5k miles. ideally, your engine really shouldnt be burning much oil at all. otherwise you may have some blowby going on in your engine.

Re: Castrol syntec 0w30 vs 5w40

i needed to add oil with the GC 0-30 in my 3.0 have not tred the 5-40 castrol.

FWIW, I know people that have switched from M1 to elf/total 5-40, and no longer need to add oil between changes.

see the thread about high end oils.
