    simple oil question.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
i have read all the posts about diffrent oils and which is the best for diffrent cases but it is still very confusing to tell which is the best for me.

I have a built big turbo audi and i race every weekend with it and i abuse it everyday. i drive it in temps between 0F to 100F.

I am currently using Mobil 1 0-40w and would like to know which is the best oil for me to use for the summer, the temps are around 70F to 100F so please guide me to the one oil i should use for the summer and the one oil i should use for the winter.

    thank you

Simple answer: Oils that meet VW502.00 specification is good year-round, in all parts of this country... from the hottest parts (ie Death Valley) to the coldest parts.

Since Mobil 1 0w40 meets 502.00, you're set. Since you drive it hard regularly, you may want to change the oil more frequently--- also consider used oil analysis as additional tools.

    Re: simple oil question.

One thing to consider, is that oils with a wide viscosity index, tend to shear down to a thinner viscosity grade more quickly than narrower VI oils do. With the very high engine loads, and temperatures, a wide VI oil is not the best choice. In fact, Castrol German Syntec, 0w-30 would be a better choice, compared to M1 0w-40, IMO. A synthetic 20w-50 would be better for your situation and driving conditions, provided you can find one with the required approvals.

Have the oil tested at every OCI, and reduce the mileage between oil changes to ~2500 miles. You should install an effective auxiliary engine oil cooler also.

    Re: simple oil question.

you race it. like you drive from light to light and quarter miles? or you raceon a track for 3-60 minutes at a time?

    m1 gets really THIN!

without knowing too much, total quartz 9000 5-40.

the 10-50 isn't VAG approved, but it might be better depending on what you're doing.

the motul 300V stuff is pretty pimp, but its not cheap. i've only read good things about the motul spec oils, but have not talked to anyone that actually has run it.

    Re: simple oil question.

i still think you're good to go with the 5-40.

    you have an oil cooler?

i would get one. but really your best bet is to run whatever you pick for 3K, then send it in to get tested. that will tell you if its any good, and how many more miles you can put on the oil the next time around.
