Aloha Boris!! I moved from NJ to Hawaii, got a 40ft container and packed up my junk..as to the car, I drove it cross country and put it on Horizonlines in Long Beach CA...took about 2-3 weeks for the car to show up..couple of hints...make sure your friend keeps his/her inspection report -- they did a bit of damage to my paint -- it could have been worse -- you will not be able to collect on damages if you drive your car away without filing a report, not that horizon is bad, just a bit of risk mgt...make sure that you have less than 1/4 tank in the car when you ship it. this is a coast guard regulation that is strictly enforced...I was an ass the night before my dropoff and FILLED the tank and then proceeded to drive like a maniac for roughly 4-5 hours around the docs and offramps before I got the gas down to an acceptable level so they could ship it...if you miss the drop of time, you are SOL, so be very careful with this one!!
when she/he moves, put the bill for all the movers on a CC so if they try to pull a fast one on you by "charging you more because you have too much crap" you can file a claim with your CC company -- our mover tried to charge us another 5K -- my wife went ballistic and they reversed the charge and put the shipper on notice...check with the shipper of they CAN use a container to deliver..if the final destination is in an area with small/winding roads, they will have to offload, hire another local freight forwarder and deliver in smaller increments, which will add to the cost and cause (potentially) more damage....small winding roads good for your audi, not so good for a 40ft container...have fun, good luck on the move and safe travels....peace!
