Fuel consumption for the 1.8TQ in 90-100% city driving mode

    Hi guys,

I am trying to get a good average for gas consumption for the 1.8TQ while driving 90-100% in the city. Driving downtown Montreal or Toronto would be good examples.

Please list, from the moment you fill up your the tank until its empty, how many KMs did your 1.8TQ give you. Also mention your car's year model, mileage, and if you would like, any mods you have done on it.

If you have tips on saving gas please mention them here as well.

Here are some tips I started using:

-To use the TipTronic option to change gears around 2000 RPM instead of 2400+, and avoid going over 3000RPM.
    - Making sure tires are not low in air.
    - turn off the car if the wait behind the red light is very long.
    - Fill up the fuel tank when temperatures are low (such as early morning or late at night)
    - Try to avoid driving on Sainte-Catherine but rather taking much better alternative streets with much less traffic and red lights (such as Doctor-Penfield or Avenue Des Pins, etc)

I can give you an idea on the 3.0 if you want.. it will surely make you feel better about the 1.8T =)

    tips on saving gas:
    - Make sure tires have the proper psi
    - Stop and go is what will most likely raise fuel consumption, so better to go easy on the pedal.
    - When approaching a stop, I put my car on neutral and let the heavy weight of the car slow it down.. and reducing brake use and fuel consumption.
    - Better to drive with A/C on than with open windows (at least on my car)
    - Get a toyota Corolla :P
    - Avoid unnecessary idle.

I have never believed in fuel additives to clean injectors. I once helped a friend of mine cleaning his VW 2.0 engine, removed the engine and left the parts in cleaner for 3 days... it barely did anything to it.

The best way to determine fuel consumption is to simply use the official fuel consumption units of measurement and, in the case of Canada, that would be litres per 100 km. I can tell you that my overall average fuel consumption is around 10.0 L / 100 km, which mixes both city and highway driving. For pure city driving, I would guestimate that I'm around 12-13 L / 100 km.

MthBusters actually busted that mith. Keeping your windows open allows you to travle much further then keeping all your windows down. If you think about it logicaly the drag created by haveing the windows down is much less when you consider the fact that the ac needs gas to power its self while the windows dont.

    Thanks for sharing the info.

OK, so 13L/100KM would mean that you are getting about 500KM on a full tank while doing 100% city-driving.. and am only getting about 320 KM per full tank..if your numbers are accurate, that means there is really something wrong with my MPG, or LPK (Liters Per Kilometers).

Yup, saw that episode. However the first test was inconclusive and they re-tested and found out that AC on is more fuel efficient at high speed.

    Anyways, here's something to read:
    http://www.bankrate.com/brm/news/auto/20050804a1.asp

When I'm driving in the city, I do roll down my windows and turn the A/C off.. and the other way once I'm on the highway.

Try this: Do a WOT on a highway (make sure it's safe for everyone) with your windows down and up. See which one will get you faster.

Re: Fuel consumption for the 1.8TQ in 90-100% city driving mode

I drive with my windows up and sunroof closed all the time even though I do about 2/3 highway and 1/3 city driving. A/C is on AUTO with the Automatic Recirc on. Temperature is a constant 21-deg C or 70-deg F.

I record every single fill-up and log it all in an Excel spreadsheet. My actual stats are as follows:

    10.5 L / 100 km overall
    Best fuel consumption per tank = 9.4 L / 100 km
    Worst fuel consumption per tank = 12.1 L / 100 km
    Maximum mileage before fill-up = 594 km
Maximum volume of gas filled = 58.1 L

I always fill premium octane, i.e. 91 octane here in Toronto. Here's the part that sucks the most:
Lowest cost of gas per litre = $1.093 / L
Highest cost of gas per litre = $1.469 / L

Overall, it costs me $0.134 per kilometer in fuel to operate my A4.

Don't use Sunoco is another tip unless you're running a program that absolutely needs the higher octane.

At any rate, city driving no matter what kills gas mileage unless you're timing everything right and not hitting any red lights. Even the speed bumps in neighbourhoods is contributing to more pollution because of the need to slow down and then speed back up again.

    This seems crazy.
