Question A4 1996 Back doors locked!!!! 2.8 V6 HELP! HELP!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys!!

I have problems with the power locks, it doesn't work whatsoever. I used to open all the doors manually, not a big deal!! However, A few days ago i went out with a girl and she brought her girl friend; i said " cool she can sit on the back seats" BUT Noo!! i couldn't get to open the back doors, (the locks themselves are stuck) no matter how hard I pulled...... i used pliers and nothing.........that was awkward.:-( anyways since then i've been trying to figure out how to get them open. Anyone knows how can i open them ?

    Thanks in advance

Re: A4 1996 Back doors locked!!!! 2.8 V6 HELP! HELP!

Check your fuses for the central locking module. The module itself is in the trunk on the passenger side under the lining. It should make a noise when you use the remote if you have one or hit the unlock button.

You can also unhook the lines to the lock module and apply a vacuum to the car-side connectors, not sure which on is which but you can't hurt anything. You can get a vacuum pump tester at autoparts for under $20 or try creating your own vacuum.

One reason the doors are not opening is the kiddie/drunken friends locks are on. When you get the door open look at the rear edge for the little button to turn them off.

child locks on the back doors? if your fuses are fine, chances are your central locking pump is burnt out, most likely scenario is a vacuum leak somewhere, probably where the hose leads to the trunk lock, when the vac line leaks the motor will keep running and burn out

Re: A4 1996 Back doors locked!!!! 2.8 V6 HELP! HELP!

Couple of screwdrivers and some needle nose pliers ought to do it if you can pull enough suction on the vacuum lines yourself. You could also try pulling the middle connector on the central lock box for a minute and reconnect for a hard-reset. Once is enough more tries may p!ss it off.
Heres a DIY on getting to the box.

Fuses are easy. Drivers side.... door open ...under a panel on the side of the dash. << lOOk here 1st.

I know the 97s had them, E-T, and I thought the 96 cars did too.
    Did I think wrong?

Re: A4 1996 Back doors locked!!!! 2.8 V6 HELP! HELP!

well i checked the fuses and everything seemed ok. Then i checked the power lock pump, and i got surprised when i saw that the purple conector was unpluged. So i put pluged it back in and the alarm started beeping ''beep''''beep..''! at the moment i didnt know what to do. it stopped after about 30secs then i tried to start the car and it didnt start. also tried to see if the power locks worked, but they are not working. :( finally i unpluged the purple conector from the pump cause i couldnt make it work. now im stuck. I dont know what to do. if i plug the cable the alarm will come on. i have the remote but it doesnt do anything. :( Does anyone know what can i do to make it work? thanks for the help.

Re: A4 1996 Back doors locked!!!! 2.8 V6 HELP! HELP!

The locks wont work via the switch if the alarm is triggered. The car wont start when the alarm is triggered too. This is normal.

Disconnect the middle plug ..it is power.. first and then put the purple one in.
always put the middle connector on the central locking module in last and remove it first when working on it. Remote proly just needs to be recoded to your car.

If this doesnt help, you could have a bad module and the previous owner or mech pulled that purple plug for a reason.

You are right. The central lock pump is shut. i tried connecting it in different ways but it didnt work. also it makes a noise when it stops trigging .so now Do you think that if i buy the central lock pump it will work, or is not that easy to fix? Hey thank you so much for the help. :)

Re: A4 1996 Back doors locked!!!! 2.8 V6 HELP! HELP!

Did you open the module and find a broken pump inside? Thats an easy fix and cheap using a salvaged pump.

New central locking module from the dealer is big bucks. I would get used from an auto salvage yard. Very good chance of success if you replace the whole box. Theres an Audi part number on yours to match up to the replacement used one.

You know, the alarm could just be triggered and there is nothing wrong with the box.
You would need to hook your car up to a code reader and try resetting it and then re-matching your remote to the car to know for sure. Nice Audi/VW dealer or a local with the VAG COM software could help you out with this.

Im gonna try and change the power lock pump box. Hey you know yesterday my friend was trying to fix it and cut some cables ( he said he knew what he was doing, but seems like he didnt) Now my trunk wont open. :( do you think it has to be anything with the central lock pump? my trunk would open before and wouldnt locked but now i cant get it open it. i use the key but it doesnt turn, i only can press the button on it. idk whats wrong now. Hopefully when i change the power lock pump it will work. :)

Re: A4 1996 Back doors locked!!!! 2.8 V6 HELP! HELP!

hey no prob. Thas what this place is all about, right hehe?

The only thing I can think is the actuator or its cable got jammed somehow. its by the button in the trunk lid. guess you gotta go thru the back seat. Once you get it opened, carefully disconnect the vacuum lines on the lock module. They have a little release you have to squeeze before the line comes off. apply vacuum to the different hoses on the car side till the back doors & trunk come undone, then you can turn off the kid safety locks while looking for a replacement module.

speaking of.....anyone know how it could be reset without a working remote? Maybe its ok but stuck on alarmed. Just for yucks I would cruise over to your local VW/Audi dealer, tell em you are a new owner and ask about un-arming your alarm.

Ha i know, but anyways not all the people take their time to instruct a noob like me.

I was trying to open the trunck from the inside but i dont see where is the release button. Hey do you mean i put like air preasure to one of the hoses (the red one who connects to the back of fhe module) im gonna try that. You said in Auto Parts they sell vaccums, or i can create my own!? That is kinda complicated i guess. now i just want my trunk open.

    thanks

Re: A4 1996 Back doors locked!!!! 2.8 V6 HELP! HELP!

OK well, I connected the new Central Lock Pump and nothing. Still the doors and trunk wont unlocked.
Should I do something, so that the car recognized the new CLP?
When i plugged the old CLP, the alarm triggers. When I plugged the new one, it doesn't trigger, but it doesn't work.

Could anytime please advice me on what could I do? (i tried by disconnecting the battery, but still wont work)

    Thanks

Make sure you plug in the brown connector last < middle one

Does the door lock switch work now or the key switch? Hear any noises when you try? Might need a fuse if not.

Your remote will have to be re-learned to the new c lock box. You'll need a 2nd key to do this. Oh yah, the new box will need to be re-coded. Got VAG COM?

No, I don't have a VAG-COM. Do i need this scanner to program the new c lock box?

Yeah, you might have to code the box to your car and clear any DTCs with vag com. CL fuses should be in the panel up front. Is this a new module or a salvaged one?

The module is a salvaged one that I bought off online from a VW/audi junk yard.
They claim to test the parts that they sell. So i think the module is ok.

Hey do you know if i could clear codes with the free version of vag-com or would i need to buy the membership?

I'd say the rear doors are deadlocked.

If this is the case, even a pair of pliers wouldn't pull the lock buttons up.

Hey Iz, I think you have to have the paid version to do coding, but the shareware vers will clear trouble codes IIRC. This is one of the best things you could own for your car BTW.

Here's a wiki from them on remote relearning and clearing:

    I finally opened the trunk.

I removed the liner in the trunk.

I accessed to the latch and push the little rod and it got open.:-)
