    Where is the boost?

Okay, I decided to start a new thread since my post was not getting enough visibility in the "turbo lag" thread.

I have an '03 1.8T Multitronic CVT but I am not really sure if I am feeling the turbo or not. I have heard that the turbo won't kick in until 3500 rpm, but with regular driving around town, the CVT tends to keep the rpms below 3000, unless of course I floor it.
Does this mean that with everyday driving, I don't ever use the turbo? I'm confused.

    Re: Where is the boost?

I think saying "not using the turbo" isn't right. The turbo's always spooling, but under 2500rpm it's not pushing enough to feel much. There's not a lot of exhaust gasses coming out at that rpm, especially if you're not flooring it, so there's nothing to push the turbo...

    Re: Where is the boost?

The boost gauge on my stock k03 5-spd goes into boost at about 3k when I punch it. 2000-2500, which is my "normal driving" shift range stays in vac.

    same.

plus if youre stock, youre not really pushing much boost. which could be another reason. yes your car is turbo charged, but it is a very small turbo.

    Re: Where is the boost?

Here's another thing you're going to have to comes to terms with:

I don't know how to explain it, but with the CVT the car feels a lot slower than it actually is. I've got an APR 1+ chip, FMIC, Down pipe, APR Inlet, and Forge DV and, for example, if I floor it from 60mph I don't feel much like I'm going fast until I look back down and see I'm doing 100. The CVT 0-60 is great because there's no lag between shifts, so if I shift up ~5200rpm I can keep the turbo in it's powerband and just get a constant pull to 60.

I don't know if it's coming across right, but the lack of shift shock among other things make it feel like you're barely moving even though if you gauge your speed by looking at a light post or sign you haul ass.

Full stock boost is specifed as avaliable from ~1900 rev/min, > at full load.
