Question Vibration at 70mph while coasting??

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Guys-

The thing is this...I have vibration in the front of the car only at speeds of 70 mph to 80mph while coasting. My car has Stoptech 332BBK and Vogtland coils. I thought it was my outer CV joints and had them repaired. However its still there. I also looked at my tie rods and inner boots and they all look to be fine.

I have done much research and wondered if anyone can help me diagnose. My thoughts are:

    1. Upper control arms??
    2. Re-balance tires??
    3. Front alignment?
    4. My rotors? (measured them and only have like 2mm left of use)

    Appreciate the help.

Has the car been aligned since you had the coilovers installed?
Sounds mostly like a potential tire balance issue.

Yes. it was aligned after the coilover install. I'm gonna get the two fronts re-balanced tomorrow. Thanks for the input. I"ll report back, but hopefully that's the solution.

Any further word? Sounds like a wheel balance issue to me.

Re: Vibration at 70mph while coasting??

Guys! Had all four wheels/tires rebalanced and still have vibration from 60mph now. Also, I now have a clunk when I half turned to the right at 5mph and same clunk over speed bumps at 2mph. AHHhHH!

Also, I noticed when I braked from 70mph to 60mph the vibration would diminish slightly. Warped rotors? (remember, I have the 2piece stoptechs that do need replacing)

I'm thinking outer tie rods? I will jack the front up tonight and pull on the wheels to check for wear. Please help!

Honestly it could be that they're still out of balance. We've had wheel sets that have had to be balanced 3x to get them perfet.

Have you checked your CA's and TRE's?

If you know you need to replace the ST 2pc rotors, then I'd suggest doing so and taking that out of the equation.

True, true. I checked the CA and TREs last night. I took a pic but hard to see. Basically the left TRE was bent about 2mm in the middle where the bottom of the joint rests on the CA assembly. The other TRE looked fine. All CAs looked fine as well.

I'm gonna order the rotors and replace the TREs with the S4 single piece unit.
    Then rebalance when I can.

Re: Vibration at 70mph while coasting??

If you have aftermarket wheels (which im assuming you do) then make sure you have hub centric rings or your wheels wont settle on the hub right. You probably already thought of this, but that was a problem i had for a while after checking everything else. thought id let ya know.

Re: Vibration at 70mph while coasting??

I had a similar sounding vibration, at 25mph and at about 78.
The dealer diagnosed that 3 out 4 wheel bearings needed replacement.??
It is in today having the work done, I will let you know how it goes.

I'm glad I took a few minutes and lurked around....this sounds like the same issue I am having. I posted up a thread asking the same question. I would be very appreciative if someone finds the answer.

This is the link that I posted.

Yeah, let me know bc I'm thinking its the bearings too. Also, had my wheels/tires road-force balanced and checked CAs.

Re: Vibration at 70mph while coasting??

I get the same thing from 55-65 mph but and its most noticable right in the middle at 60. I had some wobbel on breaking also so the rotors are getting replaced currently. I should take the wheels in and have them balanced. If you guys figure out what was causing your vibration post it up

Re: Vibration at 70mph while coasting??

I have the same vibration, at 60mph. I had it on stock wheels/suspension. I upgraded to FK coilovers and 19" wheels and it mostly went away. Those tires cupped, the vibration returned so I replaced with new tires and alignment. I still have the vibration, it's subtle, but it's there around 60mph.

    Is it the bearings?

Have the wheels/tires re-balanced using a road force machine. I bet they're just a touch out of balance.

I will do that. But I'm reluctant to do that because I experienced the vibration on stock 17" wheels and stock suspension. The vibration then occurred on coilovers with 2 sets of tires and larger 19" wheels. So it seems to go beyond the wheel/tire, at least in my head it does.

Ah, got it. Hmmm, I doubt a wheel bearing would be causing your vibration (usually always cause humming/growling). I'd have a shop take a look further.

Yea, I think I will. Just wanted to know what some of the causes could be. Hope warranty covers it, whatever it may be.

Re: Vibration at 70mph while coasting??

Hmm I had something similar on my old set of wheels. I noticed a slight vibration around 60-70mph and I always felt my car pulled slightly to the right. I didnt get the wheels balanced, but soon after my front right tire wouldnt hold air. It ended up wearing so badly on the inside that it wouldnt hold air anymore. I put on new wheels/tires and got it aligned. Even after alignment I felt like the car would every so slightly pull to the right and I'm starting to notice a slight vibration again around the same speed 60-70mph.
