    Code thrown following timing belt

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey, I just got finished doing the timing belt on my car. Everything went really well and the car runs and sounds fine. But for some reason I am threw a CEL right after doing the belt. Its late right now and haven't had a chance to VAG it, but I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts as to what it might be. Im out of ideas. Probably something stupid again like my damn O2 sensor freaking out about my test pipe haha.

It is a light on the dashboard that has the shape of an engine but that's not important right now.

Re: Code thrown following timing belt

Sorry guys. I told you i would get one posted today. Bad news though. I threw P0011 which apparently is incorrect camshaft timing. But I know that I didn't miss a tooth because I marked the bottom crank as well and did one full turn and both the top and bottom shafts matched perfectly. The car seems to run perfectly fine, however the idle sounds unsteady but only from the exhaust. The engine sounds fine and the idle on the tach doesn't move at all. Any thoughts?

Re: Code thrown following timing belt

You should really verify how much it is off. You can easily do it by dropping the belly pan and cranking the motor until the crank is lined up with its mark. Then pull the TB cover and see how many teeth you are off on the cam. You should take the front end off again or at least get it into the service position to pull the belt and realign everything. I was able to correct the timing that was off almost 3 teeth by just putting in it service position. Then I pulled the belt off the cam. Adjusted cam, and pulled the TB back on the cam with a few thin/short flat head screw drivers.

    The crank looked like this...

When the cam was lined up...

I know that is a backwards pic of how it should be. With the Crank lined up that equaled three teeth off on the Cam.

Thanks man, I guess I could double check again.... I was pretty sure it lined up but maybe I smoked a few too many bowls that night.

doesn't necessarily mean you are correctly timed. on my aeb the timing mark for the camshaft pulley is not exactly perfect, so the pulley sits slightly off. if you're not careful or paying attention you can rotate the camshaft pulley in the wrong direction, be off one tooth, and everything will appear to line up.

I think i just might be off a tooth on the lower crank. But its weird. My car sounds fine and runs better than ever. I think it is actually pulling harder and smoother then it did before which is kind of weird. The idle thing isn't even an issue anymore. But yeah, need to yank her apart again.

Re: Code thrown following timing belt

Ok guys, so I busted into it again yesterday to see if I could figure out if the damn thing was not aligned. So, it turned out that it was a tooth off when we opened it up. Well anyway, my concern is that I know for a fact that the car is aligned (that being that the mark on the cam and the mark I made on the crank are both aligned) but for some reason I am still throwing the same code. It is my understanding that the code can mean that my cam position sensor is out. Any other opinions on this? I am trying to figure it out before I go and buy the damn sensor which is like 100 bucks... I really just want to know if its the sensor that is causing the code to be thrown?

Next time, count teeth on the belt... Mark each mark on the cam and crank sprocket and on the belt... Make the same marks on the new belt and when you install them, make sure the belt matches the marks on the cam/crank...

I think i mentioned that I did that above?? But yeah, I marked everything, and everything is matching up now. But the ECU still is throwing the same code at me despite this. I really am wondering if its this cam positioning sensor.
